Chapter 15: The Spider Mother

Your search in the forest had proved to be somewhat unsuccessful to begin with, having only found more and more cobwebs in between the trees.

"Can you smell anything Tanjiro?" You asked the boy, gaining a nod in return.

"I can....but I can't really pinpoint anything at the moment. It's not obvious." He replied as you raised your hand and stopped him in his tracks.

"Look. There's someone just through the trees." You pointed at a boy who was crouched behind a tree just ahead of you. Though you were at a distance, you could see that he was wearing a demon slayer uniform. "He's one of us too. Come on, let's go catch up to him."

You led Tanjiro and Inosuke up to him. He didn't even realise you were there until you cleared your throat, causing him to jump.

"W-woah! Sorry I didn't mean to startle you. We're Mizunoto and have been sent to help." You explained to him. His already pale face went even paler.

"M-Mizunoto? Y-you're only mizunoto?! They should've sent us a hashira! It doesn't matter how many mizunoto they send!!!" He sounded pretty scared, but his blubbering was not welcomed by Inosuke who punched him right in the face.

"WE DON'T HAVE TIME TO DEAL WITH WEAKLINGS LIKE YOU!!! JUST TELL US WHAT HAPPENED!!!" Inosuke grabbed him by the collar and shook him, but you put a stop to that pretty quickly.

"Inosuke! Calm down! He's quite obviously terrified and is on our side!" You said as you pried his hands off of the scared boy. "I'm really sorry about him. He's just extremely hot headed."

"S-seems like it. Thanks for jumping in and defending me like that. I-I should be the one apologising. I didn't mean to cause you any offence. It's just....so dangerous here that it's getting to a point where I feel they are just sending so many mizunoto to their deaths...." The boys voice was laced with sadness and almost anger you thought.

"Mizunoto or not, we are here to help anyway. What exactly happened here? You were sent here with others right?" You asked him, gaining a nod in response.

"Y-yeah. There was around ten of us grouped together. We were all walking around just fine....u-until something caused the slayers to start attacking each other." Hearing that made your eyes widen. Still though, the boy continued. "I-I'm lucky to be alive....s-so many others were ruthlessly killed by our own..."

"That sounds....traumatic. I'm so sorry you had to go through that. But I promise you this, we are not going to back down until we find out whoever caused that to happen!" You pat the boy on the shoulder. "What is your name by the way?"

"It's Murata...what's yours?" He asked.

"Y/N. And this is Tanjiro and Inosuke." You pointed at each of them in turn. Tanjiro waved at Murata and Inosuke just puffed air out of his nose. "Now that we're all acquainted, we can start-."

You were cut off by a rattling sound that made Murata's blood run cold. "Th-that sound....I-I heard it before w-when..."

He couldn't finish his sentence as figures slowly emerged from the darkness. When they got into the moonlight, you saw that they were also demon slayers. But something was very wrong with them....

"This...can't be good...." You said while slowly drawing your sword. "We have to prepare to defend ourselves! I don't think these slayers are in control of themselves anymore!"

"W-we can't kill them though! They might still be alive after all!" After Tanjiro said that, it made you rethink using your sword to defend yourself. He did have a point after all.

"Th-then what do we do then?!" Inosuke yelled as he leapt out of the way of one of the swings from a slayer.

"We find out what's controlling them! Shouldn't be too hard?" You rolled out of the way of an attack and looked above the one that attacked you. It was faint, but you could see the shine of a cobweb that was attached to their back.
