Chapter 5: Final Selection

The smell of the food cooking was absolutely fantastic. It had been ages since you had smelled something so delicious being cooked.

"So much food Mister Urokodaki! How come?" You asked while sitting close to the fire, your hair tied at the back to keep it tidy.

"You have both finished your training! So we are celebrating!" You could hear the joy in his voice. Something you hadn't really heard from him before.

Not that he was entirely cold to you. After all, you knew he had to be strict to train you to become the best you could possibly be.

"Here now! Eat up the both of you!" He handed both you and Tanjiro a bowl of the hotpot. You both graciously accepted them and proceeded to practically inhale the food he had given you.

It was delicious. The best meal you had had since you left home. So much so, that once you had finished your first helping, you asked for some more.

"Of course you can! Growing boys like you should eat plenty!" He said while pouring more into your bowl.

After you had finished, you could feel the fatigue catching up with you. However, you remained in the room with Urokodaki for a while afterwards.

Tanjiro had already fallen asleep on your shoulder, with your arm around him to make sure he didn't slip off.

"The bond you both have will do wonders for you in battle, that is for sure." Said Urokodaki as he observed you both.

"It will. As long as I live, no harm shall come to him. No matter how powerful the demon is. They will have to get through me first." You replied.

"You certainly do have a brave heart. However, do not let that be your downfall. You can be brave, but be cautious as well." He stood up and walked over, gently placing a hand on your head. "I want you to survive final selection and come back to me after all."

You nodded your head and smiled up at him. "I will. Both of us will. You don't have to worry Mister Urokodaki!"

He hummed and reached for his blanket and pillow. "Rest well tonight. You will most certainly need it."

That was enough for you. Once making sure Tanjiro was asleep and comfortable, you set yourself down.

Staring up at the ceiling, an immense feeling of pride took over you as you smiled and closed your eyes.

You fell asleep very soon after.

You both were awake early the next morning. After taking a few moments making sure your sword was fastened to your waist and to bid a sleeping Nezuko a very emotional goodbye, you headed outside.

"Here. I have something for you both." Urokodaki was seeing you and Tanjiro off to final selection. In his hands, he had two masks that were very similar to the ones that Sabito and Makomo had.

Another thing to note was that Tanjiro had a new haori on. It was a sky blue colour with clouds on it, exactly the same as what Urokodaki was wearing.

"Oh! A mask?" You asked as you took it from his hand and inspected it carefully.

"Yes. They are called warding masks. Both have been enchanted by a protection spell. They will keep you from harm." He explained, causing you to nod.

"Thanks so much Mister Urokodaki!" Tanjiro cheered as he adjusted the mask to sit on top of his head.

"You are welcome. Now go. And do not worry about your sister. I will take good care of her." Tanjiro smiled and nodded his head before bringing the old man into a hug. "Just make sure you do come back...."
