Chapter 29: Preparing To Move Out

"CAWWW!! CAWWW!! MISSION!! YOU HAVE A NEW MISSION!!!" The peaceful morning was shattered by the loud cawing from your Kasugai crow.

Finally, you had another mission after all of your recovery and additional training. You felt much better and stronger than before, and you could now put it to the test in a proper situation.

"THE CASUALTIES OF THE MUGEN TRAIN!! YOU FOUR ARE ALL TO JOIN FLAME HASHIRA KYOJURO RENGOKU!! CAW!!!" The crow yelled.

"The flame hashira....Ah yeah I remember him. He seemed really friendly!" You smiled, remembering the brief interaction you had with Rengoku.

"I...think I remember him? I was really injured at the time. I know he spoke really loudly though." Tanjiro chuckled while rubbing the back of his head.

"Yeah, anyway let's get prepared to move out then!" You said before hastily getting your uniform on and tucking your sword in your belt.

"Getting ready to head out now?" You heard Kanae's voice coming from the doorway and turned to face her.

"Yes. We're going to help Mister Rengoku on the mugen train!" You explained as Kanae nodded.

"I know. I had to give permission for you to go because you are my tsuguko!" She walked up to you and placed her hands gently on your shoulders. "I know you're very capable, but do please be careful. Do not do anything reckless."

"Of course! I won't let you down!" You smiled widely.

"I know you won't...." She wrapped her arms around you and held you tightly. "Every mission is dangerous....I just don't want to lose you so soon."

"You needn't worry! Mister Rengoku is sure to keep an eye on us! Besides, I've got Tanjiro watching my back!" You reassured her.

She nodded her head and took a deep breath before speaking again. "You're right. I'll let you go and say your goodbyes to the other girls now."

Before she let you go, she planted a soft kiss on your cheek. "Good luck...."

You blushed as she let go of you, smiling as she turned around and walked away. For a few moments you stood there, before walking off in search of the other residents of the butterfly mansion.

Eventually you found Aoi outside hanging up the washing. You walked up to her and she turned around just as you got close enough to talk to her.

"Oh hey. What's up? Is there anything you need?" She asked while picking up a sheet and beginning to fold it.

"Just wanted to say that we're all about to head out now! And to say thank you for taking care of us! So, thank you!" You bowed and smiled at the stern girl.

"You're welcome, but you really don't need to thank me. I'm just doing my job after all." She said as she threw the folded sheet over onto the drier. "It might not have been too long, but I'm glad we got to spend the time together."

"Same here! When we return, I do hope to spend more time with you Aoi! Although I know you're busy all the time." You said as she slowly turned to face you.

"....I hope so too." She began before pausing and sighing deeply. "....you know, I was lucky to get through final selection. And after that I....was too much of a coward to go back into battle. Seeing you arrive in the state you were in....just made me feel even more scared."

You walked up and placed a hand on Aoi's shoulder. "Don't let that sort of thing get to you so much. We are all strong in our own way. You say it was luck that got you through final selection, but you were still brave to go and do it. No matter what path you decided to take after it, you should be proud of what you have done for everyone who has come to be healed here."
