Letty Torretto was not used to failure. Set backs? Absolutely, mishaps? Too far beneath her. But failure was something that she couldn't shake away.
She and Dom had recently taken in his son. Brian Marcos Torretto. The kid was his father in every possible way. From his mesmerizing eyes, to his somehow adorable, somehow confident little grin.
It had taken time to get to learn the little boy's personality. His likes and dislikes, and his broken ways of communicating. He was just coming up to a year and a half and already talking decent English.
She wasn't his mother by blood, and she had to admit that it did take a toll on her to accept that, but, she was getting there now.
She had had her moments with Little Brian, he was such a sweet boy that the entire family instantly fell in love with. But she would admit that feeling when he would reach for Dom instead of her, did hurt a small bit.
The two were trying to form a bond that wasn't naturally there and just when she thought she had it, something always ruined it on her. Today was no exception.
She was doing the laundry. Dom was out, and little Brian was in the play pen. When she had finished she called over to Brian "you doing good there, bud?" . "Mmmn hmmn". He hummed. "Can you play tag with me? .... please?" He asked sweetly. "Course I will buddy. I'll give you a head start". She smiled as she heard Brian's feet pitter patter away.
The game was going well, until suddenly Brian tripped on his laces and slammed face first on the floor. Letty felt her soul leave her body as she heard the bang. Little Brian began to cry. In an instant Letty was by his side. "Oh baby, it's ok. It's ok" she soothed. She had noticed his shoe had untied.
'shit' she cursed herself mentally. "I'm sorry, baby I should have noticed the shoe sooner". Just then Dom walked in. Brian ran to him. In that moment Letty felt a piece of her heart get torn. "Hey, kid, what happened". Dom soothed the small boy. "I....I fell, Daddy and....I....I...hurt my head". Brian stuttered.
Letty too ran. She made her way to her room she shared with Dom. She truly felt awful for not seeing the united shoe before the incident. She cursed herself. 'you are definitely not meant to be a mother'. She scolded herself harshly.
She just let herself cry for a few minutes. 'you ruined any chance you had at a relationship with that kid'.
A few minutes later, a knock came at the door. "Come in" she called as she furiously wiped the tears out of her eyes.
Little Brian popped his head in. "Hey buddy" she sniffed. "How's your Head?" She asked. Little Brian climbed up on the bed. "Daddy made sure it was ok". He said sweetly. "I'm so sorry, baby. I should have seen that your lace was undone".
Little Brian was holding a piece of paper. "What you got there?" She asked, trying to keep her emotions in check. Little Brian looked at the paper. "Daddy told me to give these to you. He said that I can finally ask you to be my Mommy". He said as he handed the pieces of paper to her.
She looked at the paper. Adoption papers. "It's ok if you don't want to be my Mommy. But I would really like you to. No one else should be". He said with as much sincerity as a near two year old could have.
Letty let a few tears slip. "Of course I will, little man". She signed the papers there and then. "Yaaaayy" Brian said as he leapt to give Letty a Big hug. "You're my Mommy. I have a Mommy that's here again" he said super excitedly. Letty never knew how much one word could make her feel reborn, changed, loved and so in love.
"I love you, mommy" he said and that was the sentence that broke Letty's slightly cracked shell. "I love you too Baby. More than words can ever say". She hugged him tight. "Daddy. She said yes! I have a Mommy again!!" He called out to his dad as he toddled to show his dad the papers. Letty held her hand over her heart. This was one of the few moments in her life that she would treasure until the end of time.
The end.
