It was late when the barbecue started to wind down. Little B had run riot with his cousins all afternoon. It was a sight to their parents, to see these innocent children all laughing and playing together like normal kids despite their... Occupations.
It was his bedtime after the guests had left, he wanted Letty to put him to sleep. Letty didn't mind putting this little angel to sleep. She never saw herself as a mother but after a few years with this little guy, she had gotten the knack for it.
He held her hand as they went up the stairs into his bedroom. He got into his racing driver pyjamas and settled him into bed. Letty read his favourite story to him and once she made sure he was ready to drift off to sleep. She kissed his small curls and whispered "goodnight, little man".
Brian snuggled into his soft mattress and mumbled sleepily "night mommy". Letty stopped dead in her tracks. She turned back around to the now sleeping boy. Normally it wouldn't be out of the ordinary for a 5 year old to stay the word "mommy" to their mother figure... But for Letty this was an event.
Dom and Letty had sat Brian down one day and told him about Elena, how she died, how she loved him very much and how she was always looking down on him. They tried to explain it to Brian so he'd understand that Letty wasn't his biological mother, but she would be whatever he needed her to be. Brian however didn't really know what to call her, so he just usually tugged at her leg if he wanted her attention specifically
So to hear him call her "mommy" really shook her. She felt tears rise. Tears of joy, sadness, and guilt. She knew deep down that Elena should be hearing that more than her, but she promised herself thst she wouldn't let Elena down, she wanted her son protected and Letty was going to do that until she was 6 ft under.
She wiped her tears and stared at the boy for a moment longer, before closing the door gently and just stood there.
Dom came up and saw Letty with her head pressed against the door. "baby?, what's wrong?" he asked. Letty turned to him. Inches apart As he held her waist.
She looked at him. "he said it" was all she said. Dom was more puzzled. "said what?" he asked back. "mommy, he called me mommy". She said. Dom looked at her. He knew what she was feeling right now , 20 years together and he had memorised every mood of hers.
"does that make you uncomfortable?" he asked her. "no". She said immediately. "I just feel guilty. That should be Elena hearing that...but....". Dom hushed her. "I know, I know". He grimaced. "she'd be happy to know that even though she's gone, he still has a loving, caring mother figure in his life". He tried to ease Letty's guilt. "if there's anyone she'd want to be called that for her, it would be you Let".
Letty hugged Dom harder. She hated looking vulnerable, especially in front of people. But she knew Dom was right, Elena and Letty had only known each other briefly, but they had a mutual respect, she took care of Dom when she had "died" so this was her way of returning the lifelong favour.
He cradled her for a while longer, reassuring her she shouldn't feel guilty and that she was what Elena would have wanted for her son.
"better?" he asked her. "mhmnnn". She mumbled into his shoulder "good" he smiled into her hair . "so, mommy, you ready for this name to stick?" he smirked.
Letty looked him in the eye. "I am... I've never wanted a name to stick as much". She said passionately.
Dom smirked wider. "not even, my wife?" Letty looked at him, matching the smirk. "well... That name was always going to be mine, seeing as how infatuated you were with me since we met, this name feels more earned". She teased with a kiss.
This family wasn't what she thought of when she pictured herself and Dom as parents, but she wouldn't trade it for anything. These two were her ride or die, her family, her boys.
