Lexie

Evelyn sighed, sitting down at the back of the clinic. She had offered to help Deaton for the day needing to distract herself. Scott was visiting Gerard with Allison, and Evelyn had made them both promise to be careful but decided they would get more information if she stayed away, knowing that Gerard would veer off-topic just to antagonize her. "Mommy!" Lexie shouted, running into the room waving a small stuffed dog over her head. Deaton walked in behind her, leaning on the exam table and smiling as he watched the two girls.

"Hey, little one," Evelyn said, reaching out and pulling the small child into her lap. "Where did you get this from?" She asked, tapping the stuffed animal.

"Mr Deaton gave it to me," Lexie said happily before bouncing out of Evelyn's lap and running off.

"Be careful," Evelyn shouted after her, keeping one eye trained on the little girl as she turned to Deaton. "A stuffed puppy?" she asked. "A wolf puppy?" she added after examining the toy closer.

 "She's cute," Deaton said.

Evelyn rolled her eyes. " And I see she's already got you wrapped around her little finger," she said, smiling.

"What about her father?" He asked. Evelyn's face dropped.

"He's dead," she said simply. "And now you're wondering what connection she has to the twins," Evelyn said as Deaton opened his mouth to ask another question.

"I'm going to guess her father was somehow connected to them," he said. Evelyn nodded.

"He was their brother, she said quietly. He was human," she added, "and as far as I can tell, so is Lexie."

"As far as you can tell?" Deaton asked.

"Um," Evelyn panicked, searching for the right words.

"I get what you mean," the Druid said with a smile. It hit her. Suddenly, he knew the secret Evelyn was trying desperately to hide. He knew she didn't know how, but he knew.

"Thank you," she said, knowing he would never tell anyone else. Evelyn stood up, calling Lexie over as they heard the front door open. Deaton nodded to her before going to check who was there. Evelyn, he called after a minute; she jogged into the front room to see Melissa McCall standing there. "I thought today was your day off," Evelyn said.

"It is, but when Stiles came over this morning, he mentioned that you were bleeding when you got to the loft the other day," Melissa said. Deaton looked very interested in his shoes when Evelyn looked over at him.

"And let me guess," she said, "you got a call from Deaton saying that I'm still mostly human and you should come to check on me because I'd never let him do it," Evelyn asked, rolling her eyes.

 "Something like that," Melissa said.

Evelyn groaned. "Well, I'm fine. It's just a scratch." They all walked into the clinic.

"Says the girl who called almost getting her head cut off a scratch," Deaton said. Melissa looked between the two, alarmed.

"Uh, I didn't almost get my head cut off. It really was just a scratch, and Derek was the one who got hit in the gut," Evelyn said, smiling at the memory.

"And Derek heals in like two seconds," Melissa said, smiling.

"Oh, so since I don't have werewolf healing powers, every little scratch has to be checked out by a doctor?" Evelyn asked.

"Yes," someone said from behind Evelyn. She whirled around to see Derek standing there. She just stood there for a moment staring at him, glad to see him. He looked sad but otherwise fine. "Get your wound checked out," he said.

"It's just a scratch," Evelyn repeated softly, not looking away from Derek. He reached out, tucking a loose strand of hair behind her ear and looking directly into her light blue eyes.

"You're not invincible," he whispered, watching as slowly her determination began to crumble.

"Mommy," a young voice rang out. Derek looked up, startled slightly, as Lexie ran into the room, heading straight for Evelyn. She had a kid, he thought.

"Lexie, what's wrong?" Evelyn asked, turning and kneeling down to the little girl's height, hearing the slight panic in her voice.

"The scary guy was here. He said to tell you he was sorry it turned out this way."

"Deucalion," Evelyn breathed, knowing exactly who Lexie meant. While the young girl knew nothing about werewolves or the supernatural world that surrounded her, she was, in her own way, aware of the battles being fought around her and who she should avoid. Evelyn stood up, rushing toward the door to find it open. The small bell that usually sounded when it was opened lay on the floor.

"He was here," Derek growled from right behind her. He had followed her, still confused about the child but nonetheless worried about Evelyn.

"He's making a point," Evelyn said, walking back to Lexie and sweeping the small brunette into her arms.

"Do I want to know what point?" Melissa asked.

"That nowhere is safe. He wasn't just in the clinic. He was just feet away from Lexie without me even knowing." Deaton looked between Evelyn and Derek.

"Hey, Lex, he said. Would you like to come help me brush some of the borders?" Deaton asked.

"Yeah," Lexie said, jumping down and running over to the vet. Thank you, Evelyn mouthed as they walked away.

"OK, now I don't care if it's a scratch. I need to see your wound," Melissa said. Evelyn huffed in annoyance, but she lifted her shirt up slightly, revealing three angry red scratch marks across her stomach. Melissa sighed. "It looks like the start of an infection," she said, grabbing some antibiotic cream that Deaton had set out and applying it. Evelyn winced, drawing back as soon as Melissa touched the wound. Derek stepped forward, reaching for her. He hated seeing her in pain, the instinctual need to keep her safe taking over, but he also knew that she wouldn't let him. Evelyn was the type of person who did everything to help others, even to the detriment of her own health. Instead, Derek decided to talk about Lexie.

"So you have a kid now," he said.

"Yeah," Evelyn said, looking up at him. She searched his face, trying to gauge his reaction. She wasn't sure what she wanted to see from him, but what she did see surprised her slightly. He had put up a mask hiding his emotions, but just beneath the mask was a flicker of something. Evelyn could have sworn it was jealousy, but why, why would Derek be jealous of Lexie or even of the fact that she had a child? She was just his best friend. "I guess we really have changed," she said after a minute. "I mean, you're an alpha with a pack full of moody teens, and I'm a single mother." Evelyn said, "Not where either of us planned to be after high school, not what we would have won most likely to be either."

Derek choked back a laugh. "If I remember correctly," he said, "you were going to teach at the high school, and I was going to become a pro basketball player who gave you free tickets to every game."

"I think there was travel around the world in there somewhere," Evelyn said as Melissa wrapped a bandage around her wound. "You should go talk to Jennifer," Evelyn told Derek, feeling her own jealousy rise at the mention of the teacher. "Go," she said, we'll be fine here. Derek turned, leaving.

"I'll see you later," he whispered. Melissa waited until he was gone to speak.

"He's more than just a friend to you, isn't he?" She asked. Evelyn turned away, pulling her shirt back down.

"It's complicated," she said after a minute, "and anything more than just a friendship would never work out."

"Because you're an Argent, and he's a Hale?" Melissa asked. Evelyn laughed.

"You make it sound like Romeo and Juliet," she joked, "but yes, among other things, because I'm an Argent, and he's a Hale right now. We work as friends," she said, "and that's all."
