Evelyn walked down the hall, heading for her classroom, stopping when she heard Kira mention the dead pool. The teens had filled her in on what they had found out Sunday morning, and Evelyn and Derek had filled them in on what had happened back in Beacon Hills during the full moon. I was talking about you joining the lacrosse team Mr. Yukimura said. Evelyn smiled, walking over to the two, trying to conceal her slight limp. Pro-tip, she said as Kira grabbed the jersey from her father. When your father asks you about secrets, go with the least lethal one first; it makes them worry less. I'll remember that for next time, Kira said, hurrying off. Deadpool, Mr. Yukimura shouted after her. You don't want to know, Evelyn said. Does it have anything to do with why you're limping? He asked. It's distantly related, she said. Just trust me; we won't let anything happen to Kira. She's safer with us than she would be alone. I'm still not used to her being involved in all this, Mr Yukimura said. You never really do get used to it, Evelyn said.

Evelyn looked down at the lacrosse schedule. Shit, she muttered. They were playing Devenford Prep. It was Liam's old school. Scott had filled her in on the details, but the pack's newest member still had no idea she was part of the supernatural world. She really hoped Scott was tracking the schedule. I'll pull him aside later, she muttered. She looked down as her phone buzzed. It was Braeden. Great, she muttered, picking it up and answering the phone hey, what do you need she asked. No, hello, how are you Braeden asked. Nope, Evelyn said I'm at work, and we don't exactly have the closest relationship. Look, I need to talk to a pack of werewolves that live out in the woods. I've heard that you have at least a cordial relationship with their alpha Braeden said. And who would that be? Evelyn asked. Satomi Braeden said. Evelyn stilled her heart pounding as she remembered a time long ago when she had a good relationship with Satomi. The alpha had been a friend of Talia Hale and had seen Evelyn as a kind child trying to make up for those who came before her, something Satomi understood. What do you want with her Evelyn asked. It's for Derek Braeden said she may be able to help me find Kate. Okay, I'll help, but I can't today. I'll meet you tomorrow. See you then Braeden said, hanging up the phone. Evelyn sat it down, sighing. Suddenly, she stood up straight. Something felt different; it was not like someone was in danger, but just different. Then she realized it was Derek. She could sense it. He was closer somewhere in the building. She rolled her eyes, shaking her head. What trouble were they getting into now? You know what she muttered: as long as no one is hurt, it's not my problem. She sat down behind her desk as the school bell rang. Annoyed that Derek and Scott were probably getting into trouble but at the same time comforted knowing that Derek was close. She shook her head. Nope, she muttered to herself. Focus on work, not on the extremely distracting guy who probably likes the girl who you currently hate.

Evelyn looked up as her door creaked open. Hey, you okay she asked as she saw a deflated-looking Lydia entering her room. How do you do it? Lydia asked. Do what Evelyn questioned, standing up and walking toward the young banshee. Not being able to save them, Lydia said, sitting down at one of the desks. Is this about the dead pool? Evelyn asked, or she said when Lydia didn't answer, is it about Allison? Does it get better? Lydia asked. You mean that aching feeling like it's your fault, the need to make sure you never lose anyone again, which in our lives we will. Lydia, it will never completely go away. You'll always see something and turn around wanting to share it with her or think of something and want to call her to talk, but it'll get better one day. It won't hurt as much anymore. One day, you'll remember the happy memories, and you won't feel like you want to break down crying, and one day, you'll realize that it's okay to love people because not everyone you love is going to hurt you or leave you. Lydia nodded. Evelyn leaned down, wrapping her arms around the young banshee. I know it's hard she whispered. I don't know how to turn it on Lydia whispered. I know Evelyn said trust me, I know. Evelyn could never tell if her abilities would work. Sometimes, a shield came up, sometimes not. She never knew about danger until it was right on top of them. She always felt like she was waiting for a bomb to go off.
