"Bye, Mom!" Lexie shouted as she jumped out of the car and rushed into the school building.
"Love you!" Evelyn shouted back, watching her enter the building before she drove off toward the high school. She was happy that Lexie was finally getting settled but still overprotective of the small child they had been through so much together. She pulled up outside the school to see Scott, Issac, and Stiles talking to the twins. "What are they doing here?" She muttered to herself. She slipped out of her car, slowly walking over. "And what are you two doing here?" she asked.
"They were just leaving," Issac said, glaring at the twins.
"We need a pack," Aiden said.
"Well, then prove you can be trusted." Evelyn told him, "Now I have a class to teach, and at least three of you have school, so this, whatever it is, can wait until after school." She turned and walked away.
"Evelyn, please," Ethan called after her. Evelyn turned around.
"I can forgive you for a lot," she said, "but we both know it would be foolish just to trust you." Then she turned back, walked into the building, and left the teens standing there confused.
Evelyn entered her classroom, leaning down. She set her bag down and leaned against her desk. If the twins were back, then things were going to get complicated. Her head snapped up as she heard footsteps approaching. Evelyn froze as her eyes landed on a tired-looking Derek. "Derek, what are you doing here?" she whispered, standing up as he walked closer. She knew that Derek had run into trouble in Brazil. Deucalion had "helpfully" texted her after ensuring that Braeden had saved Derek. Of course, being who he was, the alpha had waited until after Derek was safe to tell her. She had developed an odd relationship with Deucalion, both quietly acknowledging how Gerard connected them and how they had become his pawns to destroy each other.
Derek wasn't sure why he went straight to the school, but his instinct had been to find her after speaking to his mother. He'd left Peter at the loft, heading for the school where he knew she would be. He knew she had always wanted to teach, but he did find it slightly amusing that she had ended up teaching English. Something about seeing her calmed him. Knowing she was OK standing there in an outfit, he had a feeling Lydia had helped her buy, judging by the lighter colors. She was wearing a light beige floral top with a brown jacket, some jeans, and a pair of brown leather lace-up boots on her feet.
"Derek," Evelyn whispered, stepping closer to him. She reached out, touching his cheek. He jumped slightly as the contact brought him out of his thoughts and back to the present. "Hey," Evelyn whispered as Derek reached up, taking her hand in his. "What are you doing here?" She asked again.
"I wanted to see you," Derek whispered, leaning closer to her. Evelyn could see something was wrong. She also knew that whatever it was, he wasn't going to tell her, not yet, at least. Derek wasn't someone who shared readily. He always thought that keeping his troubles to himself protected others. She couldn't say much as she did the same thing. Evelyn pulled him close, hugging him tightly. Derek slipped his arms around her waist, pulling her tightly against him. Evelyn could feel him relax into her as he buried his head against her neck, inhaling her scent. They stood there for a moment, wrapped up in each other. Derek raised his head, looking around. "Your students are coming," he whispered. Evelyn groaned.
"I'll bet you none of them did their homework," she whispered.
"I should go," Derek said, pulling away.
"I'll see you later, then," Evelyn said as he turned away. Derek disappeared into the hallway as students began to file into the classroom, careful not to be seen. He wasn't quite ready to talk to Scott yet.
Evelyn leaned against the doorway as Stiles and his father approached her classroom. Several deputies milled around the hallway, checking the doors. She watched them, knowing that something was going on. As the sheriff approached, Evelyn caught sight of a deputy behind him, her breath caught in her throat. The man was a few inches taller than Stlinski, with short golden blonde hair and tanned skin. Evelyn couldn't see from the distance she was at, but she knew that he had dark brown eyes and a bulging scar running from his neck to his waist. Evelyn ducked her head, starting to turn away as Stlinski approached. "Evelyn!" Stiles shouted.
"Shit," Evelyn muttered, turning around. She found herself face to face with Stiles and the Sherrif. The man she was trying to avoid was right next to Stiles. "Hey, Stiles, what's going on?" Evelyn asked, keeping her eyes trained on the teen as she ignored the deputy's attempts to get her attention.
"William Barrow," Stiles said hurriedly,
"the shrapnel bomber?" Evelyn asked.
"So you keep up with current events," the other man said. Evelyn tensed the edge hidden in his voice, making it clear he was looking for a confrontation.
"The shrapnel bomber was important news at the time, and being a teacher, I kind of have to stay up on current events," Evelyn said evenly, not giving him anything to use against her.
"Well, that's nice to know," he said.
"Something I'm missing here," Stlinski asked.
"No," Evelyn said quickly, "you're not missing anything, Stiles; why don't we go find the others?" she said.
"Wait," the man called.
"Marcus, don't," Evelyn snapped. "I have students to look after, and you have a felon to catch end of interaction." Evelyn hurried off, Stiles racing to catch up with her.
"What was that?" Stiles asked.
"It was personal," Evelyn said, "and right now, we need to focus on trying to help find this guy before he kills someone else like one of us."
"So you're sure he's still here?" Evelyn asked Lydia as the teens sat in her classroom. They had all gathered there after hearing about Barrow, figuring it was the best place to talk.
"Yes," Lydia said.
"OK then, we need to find him," Evelyn said.
"I can look in the bestiary," Allison said, "for anything to do with files coming out of people."
"OK, you do that," Evelyn told her. "It'll probably take all night, but the least we can do is keep Barrow from killing anyone. I'll talk to the twins. Scott said we'll start in the boiler room and work our way up you guys start in the art room, and we'll meet in the middle. I'll talk to the deputy that your dad left behind, Stiles," Evelyn said.
"Um," Stiles said, "he left the guy from earlier behind." Evelyn wanted to cry she hid her face in her hands, taking a deep breath.
"What guy from earlier?" Lydia asked.
"OK, let's just everyone get done what we said we would" Evelyn said hurriedly, ignoring Lydia's question. Let's find Barrow she finished.
