Not Goodbye Just See You Later.

Evelyn leaned against Derek's car, watching Lexie say goodbye to Cora, promising to call her often. "So you're really staying?" Derek said, coming up behind her. Evelyn turned quickly to face him, stumbling on her still-injured leg. She tripped Derek, catching her with an arm around her waist.

She smiled, " Yeah, it's. This place is good for Lexie having a family. With so many teachers being sacrificed, Beacon High is taking anyone with a certification, which I somehow managed to get while on the run."

"Well, looks like we're going our separate ways again," Derek said, leaning down and looking into her eyes.

"At least we get to say goodbye this time," Evelyn whispered.

"What if I don't want to say goodbye?" Derek mumbled. Evelyn looked up at him, confused.

"We have to. You're going with Cora, and I'm staying."

"Then I guess it won't matter if I tell you the truth," Derek said, pushing a stray hair behind her ear before his hand came to rest on her cheek.

 "What truth," Evelyn whispered.

"That you were never just my best friend," Derek whispered. The breath caught in Evelyn's throat as she looked at him.

"Derek, don't," she breathed. He was leaving, and she wasn't sure she could handle it, losing him again, especially not like this.

"Why," Derek whispered, "why shouldn't I?"

"Because you're leaving and thinking that you don't care makes this so much easier," Evelyn mumbled, turning away from him.

"Easier," Derek asked, "How is this easy."

"It's not!" Evelyn exclaimed. "It's not easy. It's never been easy to stay away from you, Derek, to watch as you go out on dates with other girls, knowing that I would always be just your best friend when I've always hoped to be something else, something more, so don't don't give me hope not now when you're leaving, and I'm staying." Derek looked at her, slightly surprised by the outburst. What he did next surprised him; he leaned forward, closing the space between them and capturing her lips with his. Evelyn froze before melting into his embrace, kissing him back. She looped her arms around his neck. They pulled apart when the need for air became too much to ignore. Evelyn leaned forward, laying her head against his chest. "I must be the most unlucky woman in the world," she muttered against his shirt.

"I think I'm the unlucky one," Derek said, wondering how their lives would have been different if he'd found her after the fire instead of letting her go.

"Mommy!" Lexie shouted from behind them. Evelyn smiled, shaking her head.

"And that's our cue," she said. "This isn't goodbye," she whispered after a second; "just see you later."

"See you later," Derek whispered, letting her go and walking away." Evelyn leaned down, grabbing Lexie's hand. She turned and walked away from the loft. Evelyn kept walking even as she heard the car engine, not turning back, unsure if she would be able to continue walking if she did.
