Evelyn sat perched on the small ledge outside her window. Lexie was inside asleep, but with everything going on, Evelyn needed some fresh air and some time to herself. She looked up as she heard the soft thud of someone landing next to her. "You know it's not particularly safe to be up here," Derek said, settling beside her.
"Says the guy who's sitting next to me," Evelyn retorted.
"What's got you so grumpy?" Derek asked, "And don't say it's just Kate because the mix of anxiety and anger coming off you is much different than it was when we were fighting Kate earlier." Evelyn sighed, shaking her head. She handed Derek a letter she had received earlier that day. He raised an eyebrow but didn't say anything; he just took the letter. "Can he even do this?" Derek asked after reading it.
"Technically, yes, he is legally her father, so he can, but," Evelyn said, looking away. "He says that he has the right to be part of her life and that without any support, I'm unfit to raise her. Derek was. Was I wrong to say that after just leaving us, he didn't have the right to come back into her life?" Evelyn asked.
"No," Derek said, wrapping an arm around Evelyn's shoulders and pulling her close to him. "You did what was best for Lexie. And you do have support. You have us, all of us." Evelyn nodded, leaning into him.
"Sorry, I'm just worrying you with all of my problems. Do you want to talk about what happened with Kate?" Evelyn asked.
"First, Derek said I don't mind you sharing your problems with me, and second, no, I don't really want to talk about how I got regressed to an age where I was still dating your psychotic aunt, who is apparently still alive and somehow managed to turn my eyes back to gold."
Evelyn shook her head, letting out a snort. "We really have the most complicated problems ever, don't we?"
"Yeah, yeah, we do," Derek said. "How'd you end up with him?" Derek asked quietly. Evelyn looked up at him.
"The truth," she said. "It was stupid; it was a couple of months after the fire. I was alone at a bar, and he was charming and different. But he wasn't you," she whispered. Derek looked down at her.
"If you didn't have Lexie," he whispered as if he was afraid to ask the question, "Would you go back to him?"
"I," Evelyn started to say.
"Don't answer that," Derek interrupted, afraid of what her answer would be. He was Lexie's father, so she had to have feelings for him on some level. Derek was afraid that she truly cared for him.
"I wouldn't," Evelyn said. "Anything I felt for him, if I ever really did, is long gone now," she whispered, leaning her head against Derek's shoulder.
Evelyn walked down the hall smiling as she heard Stiles trying to convince Kira and Scott to go after the ax murderer. "How about all of you just stay here," Evelyn said.
"But," Stiles started to say.
"Look, you three, can you just try to stay out of trouble today? I have to leave and go do something, so I need the rest of you to not do anything stupid for at least the next four hours." Scott nodded, able to smell the anxiety on her. He knew something was going on, something that had her really upset. He hoped that she had at least told Derek what was going on.
Derek stood outside the small court building waiting for Evelyn. He growled as he noticed Marcus approaching. "So she called you," Marcus said, stopping beside the werewolf. "Are you two dating now or something?" He asked, knowing that the only person who could possibly stop him help Evelyn would be Derek.
"No," Derek said it wasn't for lack of trying on Derek's part, but Evelyn had told him she needed space after Allison's death. And he was giving it to her. Derek couldn't help but feel jealous of Marcus, though, even though he knew that any feelings that Evelyn ever had for him were long gone.
