Evelyn rushed out, meeting Braeden outside. She had arranged with Melissa for Lexie to stay overnight, only saying she had a hunch that she wanted to check out before she shared. No one needed to know where she was going. "Ready to introduce me to Satomi?" Braeden asked.
"Let me do the talking," Evelyn said as they pulled up to the edge of the woods. They both got out. Braeden grabbed her gun, and Evelyn grabbed her bow and a few knives.
"You really think that you could fight a person with a gun with those?" Braeden asked.
"You'd be surprised what I can do," Evelyn said; she'd been in the supernatural world much longer than Braeden and had been training since she was six. She looked small, but she could take down someone twice her size. They headed into the woods. Evelyn knew where Satomi's meeting place was, having accidentally stumbled upon it during a hunt. One time, they had been hunting for a wendigo that was killing everything in sight. Evelyn had turned around, directing the other hunters away. It had developed a bond of trust between her and Satomi. The two women rushed forward, hurrying to the meeting place. "No!" Evelyn shouted, rushing forward as she saw a dead werewolf lying on a rock. She relaxed slightly when she didn't recognize the werewolf. It wasn't Satomi. Several other werewolves were lying around them.
"Shadow duck," she heard someone yell. Evelyn hit the ground, recognizing the voice as Satomi's. Evelyn grabbed Braeden's wrist, pulling her down with her. A loud bang rang out, and bullets whizzed over her head. There were assassins here.
"Satomi, what happened?" Evelyn asked, jumping up and running to the alpha.
"It's a virus made to kill werewolves," Satomi said. They all ducked again as bullets flew over their heads.
"Go," Evelyn said, "take as many people as you can, but go run. We'll try and hold them off." Satomi nodded, turning to run. Evelyn pulled out two hunting daggers, stepping forward.
"Shadow," Satomi called. Evelyn turned at the sound of her old nickname. "Talia would have been proud," Satomi said. Evelyn smiled, nodding slightly. She raced forward, pouncing on the shooters. Evelyn downed three of the attackers. Braeden shot two more, but they just kept coming.
"There's too many of them," Braeden shouted.
"Run," Evelyn said, "in the opposite direction." Braeden nodded, taking off opposite the way Satomi had. Evelyn followed. They made it into a second clearing when Evelyn was shot. She cried out as the bullets pierced through her torso. Braeden stopped just at the edge of the clearing. Looking back, she looked at Evelyn, who lay on the ground, blood pooling around her, and then up at the men approaching. Braeden turned, taking off running. "Braeden!" Evelyn shouted, but she knew the woman would leave. She didn't blame the other woman for leaving Braeden lived in a world where it was all about survival, not family, not protecting others. That was the reason why she would never trust Braeden. Her first priority would always be her own survival and not concern for others. Evelyn turned, picked up her bow, and pulled a couple of arrows out of the quiver slung across her back. She loaded three aiming. She hit the first three. Then, the next three. Leave her; a man shouted. She'll bleed out. They backed away, doing as he said. All Evelyn could think about was that if she died here, Lexie would lose everything. She would go with Marcus, and he would take her away, never to see Argent, Melissa, Stlinski, or any of the pack again. If she died here, she'd never get the chance to tell Derek she was wrong. She didn't want space that; what she wanted was to be wherever he was. She'd never get to tell her father she loved him one more time. He'd undoubtedly blame himself for this. She never get to tell Lydia that she was enough would always be enough and should stop being stupid and just tell Stiles she liked him. Never tell Melissa thanks for being there or the thousand other things she wanted to say to the pack who had become her family. These thoughts raced through her head as she desperately clawed her way back toward the clearing. She rolled on her back out of strength. All she had was the focus to stay alive.
Evelyn woke up still lying on the forest floor. She heard a faint sound of voices not too far away. Evelyn reached deep inside, searching for where the pack was. Two of them were close. Suddenly, she heard footsteps trampling the leaves. Evelyn reached out. Derek appeared in her field of vision, grabbing her hand and pressing his own to her wounds. She could feel some of the pain start to leave her. "D Derek," she gasped painfully.
"Hold on, just hold on," Derek begged as he heard her heartbeat slow.
