Diego seems so amazed by the discovery of alien life on Europa. There may not have been news coverage for all the aspects of our mission, but you could be sure the moment we informed NASA of the first alien lifeforms and sent them the footage from the submarine they went insane. Especially with the competition of the Chinese team you better believe the United States was quick to declare victory in the quest to discover alien life.
He was upset, rightfully so, that there was no real mention about the four dead astronauts that had made that discovery possible. It shocked me that in a mission about discovering life, life could be an afterthought.
Still, it felt good to have won the race to discover alien life. My name will forever be etched in a piece of human history. That's not why I did it, but it sure made Diego proud.
Dad made sure to show his pride as well, although he was more just being supportive. He'd never understand why this mission was something I had to risk my life for. To him seeing the first images of alien life was nothing but a strange episode of the discovery channel. It didn't change his opinion about life or purposes because his purpose was family. Maybe he was onto something.
