There was an eclipse today. NASA informed us earlier in the day and we made sure we were out to catch it. I'm glad we went out for it.
With a lot of things, I've seen on Europa I'm struggling to put words together to properly describe how the eclipse looked. Maybe I don't have the best descriptive writing skills, I was always more of a math girl in school. Still, I think part of the reason I struggle so much is that English was just never meant to describe these scenes. I asked Lee if Mandarin makes it easier to describe Jupiter and some of the views we've seen, and he shrugged.
The surface of Europa has always been beautiful. It took my breath from the moment I gazed upon it. As Ganymede reached totality eclipsing over the sun, I experienced colors I honestly could not describe. With Jupiter and the stars in the background I don't think the human mind is meant to experience such an explosion of color. I could not recreate it in my mind if I tried. It was like peeking at a glimpse of heaven.
It only lasted about a minute, but the entire time it was as if my eyes were visualizing an orgasm. During the entire minute I held James's hand through our space suits. The bulky gauntlets took a bit away from the romantic nature of the gesture. It would have been if I could feel his skin against mine, but it was still nice.
After it was over Lee wandered back to the camp and me and James laid there for what must have been an hour. If Lee didn't know about us, he does now.
