It feels strange to celebrate July fourth from space. I don't know what it is, it just seems so disconnected from everything. To be honest I do not think we have celebrated any holidays up here, but the government actually ordered us to take a photo for this one. I found it pretty insensitive. We had been through so much suffering as a team on a mission we'd been way underprepared for and now we had to pose for their stupid we beat China publicity stunt.
I say that, but the picture actually came out pretty amazing. I think I might print it out and make it the first picture in the photo album Dad gave me when we touch back down. It was the three of us remaining astronauts surrounding the American flag, with Jupiter and two of its moons in the background. In the background around us the camera caught so many stars.
I can't wait for there to be conspiracy theories about the photo being fake when I am older. People could speculate all they wanted, me and the rest of this crew knew it was real.
