(MIA POV)
I raced down the corridor to my mum's room. Not wanting to upset her any further, I stopped right outside her door and took a breath to call myself before knocking softly. "Mummy? Are you awake? It's me, Mia."She was very groggy and could barely keep her eyes open, but she still managed to look over at me and smile. "Dearest, I've missed you." I went over to her and grabbed her hand, sitting on the edge of her bed. "What are you doing here?"
"I came to see you, obviously." I said, smiling back at her. "I heard you've been asking for me, so I thought I would pop in before I head back out of town."
Her smile faded, and her voice was becoming more stern, "Leaving town again? Are you ever going to settle somewhere?"
"I've been taking care of some things and handling business. Once that's all done, I'll be home for a long while." Yes, Mia. Keep your tone as calm and relaxed as possible. "You remember my work friend Charlotte? She wanted me to say hello to you for her."
Her eyes lit up, "The pretty one? Of course, I remember her. You need to snatch her up before someone else gets there first."
"Mother!" I gasped, "That's none of your business... but I am already working on it if you must know." I said laughing. Her level of excitement was just barely showing.
"That's good. I'm so happy for you." She said, yawning, "I'm so tired."
"Hey, you can't fall asleep yet. I need to talk to you about something important first." I said lightly, shaking her arm.
She opened her eyes back up, "Okay. What is it?"
"I'm going to try and be as delicate as I can, so forgive me if I upset you." She looked confused. "I heard you had a visitor today, and I need you to tell me who it was." She was getting mad. She wouldn't look at me and tried to roll away from me. "Mum, I need to know if it was who they said. It's very important."
"You must already know. You wouldn't be asking if you didn't." She said quietly.
"Was it him? Was he really here?"
She turned back and gave me a hurt look, "Don't sound so excited about it. He left us, remember? He didn't want us anymore. He never loved us."
My jaw dropped. I had never heard her say anything like this before about him. She had always stayed quiet and changed the subject before. "Mum, I'm not excited. I'm furious. He should never have been here, and he shouldn't have even known where you were."
"He knows everything." Something about her seemed so dark when she said it. Almost broken.
"Who? Dad?" I asked.
"Roger."
"Wait, what? Did Roger come and see you today, too?" The concern of my tone was also making my voice shaky.
"He told me to tell you that you should stop looking." She was getting tired again and slurring her words from how tired she was. "You don't know what they'll do if you find him." She took a long, slow breath, "They said they'd kill her, didn't they Thomas?"
She was so groggy now that she couldn't remember who she was talking to. "Who said that to you? Was it Roger, or was it dad?" I stood up next to her and tried to make her focus. "Did they say they were going to kill me? Who were they talking about?"
"You know him. Always hiding everything. She's not evil, I promise. He ruined her. She was too young. It was all your fault." She yawned again, and I could see she was getting mad about the whole thing. "You couldn't even tell me about the baby to my face. Coward."
