Yan Zhao opened her eyes, gasping in pain as she looked down to see the silver-white, furry little fox biting her hand.
As she raised her arm, the little creature hung off her hand like a dried fish, its tail swaying back and forth happily.
"What are you doing?" Yan Zhao was confused. "Why are you suddenly biting me?"
The fox couldn't answer because a loud rumbling sound from outside the cave took its place.
Yan Zhao followed the noise and saw a huge, menacing black shape illuminated by the firelight—a ferocious brown bear.
The bear charged furiously and was now at the cave entrance, its massive body almost filling the entire space.
The little fox promptly released its grip and fell back to the ground, then bit at Yan Zhao's pant leg: Run!
Yan Zhao blinked, understanding the fox's intent, but...
"How do we escape?"
The cave entrance was already narrow, and with the brown bear blocking it, the only exit was completely blocked.
In a tight spot, bravery prevails, and it seemed a fight was inevitable.
Yan Zhao grabbed the little fox and stuffed it into her chest pocket, the fox's tail brushing against her chin.
Despite the urgency, Yan Zhao thought fleetingly that in winter, a tail like this wrapped around her neck would surely be very warm.
She grabbed a piece of firewood from the flames and quickly threw it at the bear.
The firewood hit the bear's head squarely, and sparks flew into its eyes. The bear roared in anger, closing its eyes and shaking its head vigorously.
Yan Zhao seized the opportunity to rush forward and thrust a sharp wooden stick into its eye socket without hesitation.
"Roar!!!"
The bear let out a painful scream and swung its front paws forcefully.
Yan Zhao, agile as a monkey, pressed down on the bear's nose, leaped into the air, and performed a somersault onto the bear's back. She tightly embraced its neck and stabbed another wooden stick into the bear's other eye.
The bear, frenzied with pain, reared up on its hind legs, trying to shake Yan Zhao off.
The cave ceiling was low, and if Yan Zhao didn't let go in time, her back would slam against the cave wall. With the bear's furious strength, she would be severely injured if not killed.
Yan Zhao let go of the bear's fur, sliding smoothly down its back to the ground.
Now in a position closer to the cave entrance, she made a quick leap and jumped out.
The blinded bear tried to turn around in the narrow cave but ended up bumping its head against the wall, spilling blood from its eye sockets all over the ground.
Yan Zhao didn't leave immediately after getting out of the cave.
She took a blasting talisman from her bag, stuck it to the cave entrance, and poured all her remaining magical power into it.
Boom—
The blasting talisman exploded with a deafening noise, collapsing the entire cave and burying the bear under a pile of rubble.
Yan Zhao was thrown far from the explosion and rolled several times upon landing.
But she quickly got up. Ignoring her own injuries, she first checked on the fox to ensure it was still alive.
