Ren Qingyue stood in a daze for a long time.
It wasn't until Yanzhao's breathing became steady, and the cold moonlight outside gently outlined the room's furnishings, that she slowly came back to her senses.
Yanzhao was now fast asleep. In the darkness, her features were soft and serene, much calmer than when she was awake, and she no longer appeared as carefree and unkempt as she used to.
Over the past year, Yanzhao had changed significantly. Being around her daily, Ren Qingyue could clearly sense those changes.
Yanzhao no longer lived in a world of her own; she had begun learning how to communicate and engage with others.
For Yanzhao to care about her health like that was something that had never happened before.
Ren Qingyue gently stroked the top of Yanzhao's head, her mind drifting back to the memory of their battle against the lava serpent in the otherworldly realm.
She had fallen into a crevice, and Yanzhao, disregarding her own safety, had flown over on her sword to rescue her from the depths.
That Yanzhao would act in such a way had truly surprised her.
After all, at that moment, she hadn't taken the form of the little fox, but just her ordinary self, the unremarkable senior sister in Yanzhao's eyes.
Ren Qingyue gazed at Yanzhao, remembering the countless quiet nights she had silently kept her company like this.
The next morning, Yanzhao woke up early, still thinking about the little fox's injuries. It was still dark when she opened her eyes. The little fox was curled up asleep by the bedside, and as soon as she reached out her hand, she could feel its soft fur.
Remembering the wound on the fox's back, Yanzhao startled awake, quickly sitting up and scooping the little fox into her arms to check its injuries carefully.
The wound on the fox's back had scabbed over nicely, and though it was awakened by Yanzhao's fussing, the little fox seemed to be in good spirits.
Yanzhao patted its head, then suddenly remembered something and glanced around the room.
Her senior sister wasn't there.
This senior sister always came and went without a trace, and Yanzhao could never guess when she might appear.
On the table was a small medicine bottle, with only one Essence Stabilizing Pill left inside.
Yanzhao recalled that she had asked Ren Qingyue to take medicine last night.
One pill for the little fox, one for her senior sister, leaving only the last one now.
Though Yanzhao was usually stingy, she didn't feel the slightest bit of regret. She picked up the small bottle, poured the remaining pill into her hand, and brought it to the little fox's mouth. "Snowball, take your medicine."
The little fox opened its eyes, locking its gaze with Yanzhao for a moment before opening its mouth to swallow the pill she offered.
The alchemy furnace from the night before was still sitting in the middle of the room. Yanzhao got up, set the little fox back on the bed to let it rest, and went over to check the furnace.
As expected, there was a crack at the bottom of the furnace. The crack wasn't particularly obvious but had deepened slightly, which greatly increased the risk of the furnace exploding the next time she used it.
Frowning, Yanzhao rested her chin on her hand, thinking.
The little fox wasn't fully healed yet and would still need a lot of medicine. Xiao Hei was injured too, and if this furnace broke, she would only have one high-grade furnace left, which would be very inconvenient.
