Nangong Yin entered seclusion, while Yan Zhao continued her daily routine without much change. Occasionally, she would work on learning new characters, but most of the time, she just let it slide.
Ever since she confronted Snowball about the contract, Yan Zhao noticed that Snowball had been acting strangely. But this "strange" was different from before. Previously, when Yan Zhao tried to play with Snowball, it would ignore her and quietly run off as if deliberately avoiding her. Now, Snowball no longer ran away. No matter what Yan Zhao was doing, the little fox was always nearby, keeping her company.
Especially when Yan Zhao went out with unfamiliar characters to ask others about them, Snowball would either jump into her arms or follow her quietly from a distance, keeping a watchful eye on her.
Yan Zhao couldn't figure it out, so she assumed that Snowball had been lethargic before because it hadn't fully recovered from its injuries. Now that it had regained its energy, it seemed to want to play with her all the time. After all, it was a carefree little fox, unaware that humans had many things to do and couldn't spend their entire day napping.
After refining a batch of fourth-tier pills, Yan Zhao looked at their quality and felt her skills in alchemy had improved again. In the past, after refining a batch of fourth-tier pills, she would have to lie down for an hour to recover. Now, she only needed to sit down and rest for half an hour.
As she put away the cauldron, the little fox came over and naturally climbed onto her lap, curling up into a comfortable little snowball. Yan Zhao scratched its chin with a sense of satisfaction. "Such a clingy little fox."
The fox let her play with it, its big tail gently swaying back and forth, brushing against Yan Zhao's arm as if teasing her. Yan Zhao tried to grab its tail, but the fox quickly dodged, keeping just out of reach. The playful teasing made Yan Zhao itch with frustration.
"Let me touch it," Yan Zhao pleaded after several failed attempts to grab the tail.
The fox tilted its head, its glowing green eyes showing a hint of mischief as its tail swayed even faster, still out of reach.
Yan Zhao pulled out a water-element demon core from her pocket and held it in front of the fox. "I'll give you this demon core if you let me touch your tail. How about that?"
The little fox, Ren Qingyue, thought to itself, "Such cunning thoughts at such a young age."
It rolled its eyes, opened its mouth, and swallowed the demon core, but its tail kept moving, continuing to tease Yan Zhao.
Feeling tricked, Yan Zhao exclaimed, "You sly fox!"
She grabbed the little fox, curling her fingers to tickle it. The fox tried to escape, but Yan Zhao wouldn't let go. The two tumbled together in a playful scuffle.
Suddenly, there was a crisp sound, and a white jade stone fell from Yan Zhao's pocket, rolling far away. Yan Zhao looked at it closely; it was the message jade that Chen Er had given her.
Letting go of Snowball, she walked over to pick up the jade and began to fiddle with it, unsure how to use it. Chen Er had only taught her how to send messages, not how to receive them.
Just then, a small paw reached over and lightly tapped the jade. Immediately, Chen Er's voice came from the jade, "Miss Yan, we've received news from Ah Mu. Your pill cauldron has been repaired. When will you come to pick it up?"
Yan Zhao was delighted to hear that "Little Black" was fixed. She scooped up Snowball and headed out.
Halfway down the path, she suddenly remembered that she had another communication tool with her. She pulled out the token given to her by Yao Shenzi, the one used by the Medicine-Seeker's Order, and pondered for a moment before using the same method to activate it as with the jade. As she infused it with her power, the cauldron symbol on the token lit up with a dark green glow. Yan Zhao hesitated for a moment before reporting to Yao Shenzi, "Master, I have found the Purple Phoenix Bamboo and the Bodhi Root. Once Ah Yin finishes her seclusion, I can go to the Xuanhuang Secret Realm to search for the Thousand-Year Old Ginseng."
