During the half-month journey to the Taiyan Immortal Domain, the rustling sounds behind them only ceased slightly when they stopped to rest.
At first, Chen Er was terrified, but she gradually became accustomed to it. If she continued to be scared, the sand scorpions wouldn't need to attack—she'd frighten herself to death first.
It wasn't until they left the desert, and the sand gave way to hard mudstone, that the sand scorpions finally stopped following them. The boundary marker of the Taixu Immortal Domain appeared in view, signaling they had finally arrived in a safe place.
Chen Er looked back from a high vantage point and saw a massive creature, about ten feet tall, lingering at the edge of the barren land.
"What is this thing trying to do?" Chen Er muttered in disbelief. "It followed us all the way but never attacked. It almost feels like it was escorting us here."
Ye Yanran responded, "If it was escorting anyone, it would be Fellow Daoist Yan, not you. No need to feel so grateful."
Chen Er scowled, "Can you go one day without insulting me? Would you die if you didn't?"
Even though this area was remote, there were still occasional cultivators passing by the boundary marker. Upon seeing such a large sand scorpion blocking the way, they were so frightened that they made a wide detour.
Some rogue cultivators even ran off to the Immortal Alliance to request a bounty, asking them to send someone to hunt down the sand scorpion. However, before the Immortal Alliance's people could arrive, the scorpion burrowed back into the sand and returned to the desert, leaving only a faint trail that disappeared with the wind and sand.
Leading her camel, Ye Yanran bid farewell to Yan Zhao at the boundary marker, saying, "Fellow Daoist Yan, I need to return to my sect to report in, so I'll take my leave first. Chen Er is idle with nothing serious to do. You can let her show you around the Immortal Domain."
Chen Er glared at her, "Do you even know how to speak properly?!"
Without giving Chen Er a chance to retort, Ye Yanran walked away.
After she was gone, Chen Er clicked her tongue, "Honestly, she's all bark and no bite. She talks tough, but when danger comes, she's as stubborn as an ox and refuses to leave!"
Yan Zhao tilted her head, "All bark and no bite?"
Over the past few days, Chen Er had realized that Yan Zhao was a rather innocent person who didn't understand common sayings. So, she explained, "It means she doesn't speak kindly and has a sharp tongue, but she's soft-hearted."
Yan Zhao still seemed confused.
Chen Er shook her head and patted Yan Zhao's shoulder. "Forget it, it's not important. We've been on the road for days, either keeping watch or meditating—it's been so boring. Come on, sister will take you to find some fun!"
"Find some fun?" Yan Zhao felt puzzled again.
The little fox in her arms glared at Chen Er angrily, thinking that this person was so unruly. Yan Zhao was surely going to be led astray by her.
As they made their way to find some entertainment, Yan Zhao noticed a tall mountain in the distance. The peak looked like a sword, and on top of it was a massive floating structure. It was a majestic sight visible once they passed the boundary marker.
"That's the Mingjing Platform," Chen Er said, noticing Yan Zhao's attention on the distant sword-shaped peak. Munching on some sunflower seeds she had pulled out from who-knows-where, she pointed at the floating structure and added, "Next year's Immortal Sect Disciple Tournament will be held there. Hey, Little Sister Yan, have you heard of the Immortal Sect Disciple Tournament?"
