Chen Er was knocked unconscious by the snowball, and as the snowball's master, Yan Zhao naturally bore full responsibility.
Duan Jingyi, noticing the situation, offered, "Seeker of Medicine, would you like me to arrange two rooms for you and Miss Chen for the night?"
Yan Zhao nodded, "Yes."
Xuan Yuanmu didn't leave immediately either. She helped carry Chen Er into her room, set a time to meet with Yan Zhao the next day, and then bid farewell with a respectful gesture.
After returning to the room Duan Jingyi had arranged for her, Yan Zhao patted the little fox on the head and asked, "Do you not like Chen Er?"
Not only did the little fox splash wine on her, but it also threw a cup at the back of her head.
The little fox turned its head away, avoiding Yan Zhao's gaze, pretending not to understand.
"Don't do that again," Yan Zhao said to it.
She worried that the fox might get into a fight and accidentally get hurt. Although she would help, the little fox had been injured once before, and it had taken a whole year to recover. Yan Zhao didn't want it to be harmed again.
The little fox thought, Oh, so now you're scolding me for someone else's sake?
Once she finished speaking, Yan Zhao was sure the snowball had understood, so she didn't dwell on the matter further. She took off her shoes, climbed into bed, and soon drifted off to sleep as her head hit the pillow.
The little fox wriggled out from Yan Zhao's embrace and curled up near the edge of the bed, two feet away from her.
In her sleep, Yan Zhao turned over, reaching out to pet the fox, just as she usually did. The little fox's ears twitched at the sound, and it opened its eyes, glancing at Yan Zhao. Seeing her hand grasp the air, the fox snorted softly and turned its back on her.
The next day, Chen Er woke up to find herself lying in a room at the inn, her head throbbing slightly. She wasn't sure whether she had passed out from drinking too much the night before or if she had hit her head somewhere. Naturally, her plan to chat with Yan Zhao all night hadn't happened. Judging by the light, it was already past noon.
She pulled open the door and, by chance, saw one of the inn's attendants passing by. She called him over and asked, "Which room is Yan Zhao staying in?"
"Right next to yours," the attendant pointed to the door beside hers.
The door was closed, and it wasn't clear if Yan Zhao was inside or not.
After dismissing the attendant, Chen Er was just about to knock when the communication jade at her waist began to glow with a soft white light. She picked it up and channeled her power into it, hearing Xuan Yuanmu's slightly distorted voice come through, "I'm at the inn. The auction starts in half an hour. Tell Yan Zhao to come down."
Understanding the situation, Chen Er walked over and knocked on Yan Zhao's door.
Inside, Yan Zhao was in the middle of her daily alchemy practice. Eyes closed and fully concentrated, she was controlling three alchemy furnaces at once to speed up the process. Ever since leaving the Sand City Immortal Market, she hadn't had much time to practice alchemy, so she took the rare early morning as an opportunity to actively set up her furnaces and get to work.
When the knock sounded, Yan Zhao was nearing the final stage of refining and was too focused to hear the noise outside.
"Is she still sleeping?" Chen Er muttered softly, knocking again.
