At the edge of the cliff, Bai Jin endured great hardships, while the three above felt terrified.
Fortunately, although Little Gold seemed on the verge of collapsing and disappearing from their sight, it was surprisingly resilient, pulling the little red fox up by its tail from below the cliff.
After a hard struggle, they finally reached the top. Little Gold released its grip, and Bai Jin screamed as she fell to the ground.
She landed perilously close to the edge. The little red fox, in pain, instinctively curled up, almost slipping over the cliff. Ren Qingyue acted quickly, throwing her sword just before Yan Zhao could react.
Clang—
The sword struck the ground, embedding itself along with the sheath, effectively stopping the little red fox.
Exhausted, Little Gold swayed and collapsed into Yan Zhao's arms.
Yan Zhao gently patted its head, brushing away the fox fur stuck to its little paws, urging it to rest in her small black belly.
Ren Qingyue moved the little red fox to a slightly safer spot.
Bai Jin trembled from the pain, but for the first time in her life, lying in her cousin's embrace, she felt the warmth emanating from Ren Qingyue. Tears of gratitude filled her eyes.
Her cousin had saved her life once again.
This life belonged to her cousin now; she would dedicate herself entirely to her, willing to face fire and water...
Just as her long train of thought finished, Ren Qingyue set her down.
Ugh, her cousin's heart felt as cold and hard as the ground beneath her.
"What happened?" Ren Qingyue asked her. "Where did the Fox Emperor and Tu Shan Yu go?"
The little red fox came to her senses. Heavily injured and depleted of magic, she couldn't revert to her human form, so she could only communicate in frantic fox sounds.
After a moment, Ren Qingyue understood and turned to Yan Zhao, saying, "They fell down the cliff."
Yan Zhao was surprised. "Sister, you understand what she's saying?"
Ren Qingyue paused, clearing her throat. "I can roughly guess a bit."
Yan Zhao nodded, not questioning further. "Oh, sister, you're so clever. I wouldn't have guessed."
Ren Qingyue remained silent and quickly fed Bai Jin a fire attribute demon pill, then handed her over to the Medicine God's son.
He placed the little red fox on his shoulder, advising, "Little one, stay put and don't move around."
Bai Jin felt a wave of sympathy and complied, lying still.
Her wounds were still fresh, and she had stayed in her original form with Tu Shan Yu throughout their journey.
They had been ambushed partway, with the Fox Emperor and his son forced down the cliff by the elders of the Medicine Sect. The black-clad assailants had pursued them over the edge, demanding to see either the living or the dead.
While falling, Tu Shan Yu had thrown her up, telling her to hold on for the Medicine God's son to come to the rescue, while he accelerated downwards, soon disappearing into the mist below, leaving no trace behind.
Whether he was alive or dead was unknown.
After ensuring Bai Jin was settled, the Medicine God's son, as before, gripped Yan Zhao and Ren Qingyue's shoulders and jumped down the cliff.
