Pang Da clung to Heitianba's shoulders, hiding behind him, his legs trembling uncontrollably. "Village head! What's wrong with this ghost?!"
The corpse puppet originally had no eyes, relying on the residual, aimless soul and the array for connection. It attacked indiscriminately any living beings within the array.
But now, it had grown a pair of eyes.
"Why panic?!" Heitianba's face twitched, his hand holding the yellow talisman sweating coldly. However, he said, "We have talismans with the same origin as the beast blood. The corpse puppet won't target us! What are you afraid of?!"
"R-Really?" Pang Da swallowed nervously, feeling a cold wind blowing from behind.
The corpse puppet stopped attacking Yan Zhao and turned to stare at them for a moment. Then it began to move toward them.
Pang Da let out a cry of alarm. "This is unreliable! It's clearly coming for us!"
The corpse puppet's steps appeared slow, but it covered the distance quickly in the blink of an eye.
Pang Da screamed and tried to run, but Heitianba grabbed his clothes and pulled him in front.
Before Pang Da could react, the intense pain split him in half.
Pang Da's eyes widened in terror as he looked at his own body. A deep wound extended from his left shoulder to his right hip, and his belly was cut open by the corpse puppet's sharp claws, his intestines spilling out.
"Ahhhhhhh!!!!"
Heitianba pushed him from behind, and Pang Da lost his balance, tumbling uncontrollably.
With a dull thud, the corpse puppet impaled his chest and abdomen.
Pang Da hung on the corpse puppet's arm, convulsing a few times before dying.
The corpse puppet flung his body away, which crashed to the ground, rolling several times before coming to rest face-up, covered in yellow mud, bloodied, and with eyes wide open in a horrific death.
Heitianba cursed under his breath, feeling that his assured victory had vanished in an instant due to the corpse puppet's sudden loss of control.
His peripheral vision caught sight of Yan Zhao behind the corpse puppet.
Coincidentally, he met her gaze, which glowed with a hint of red.
Under her disheveled hair, Yan Zhao's gaunt face and pale skin made her look like another malevolent spirit emerging from the ground.
Heitianba's mind raced, and in a flash, he understood something.
It's her! This girl is behind it!
He didn't know how she controlled the corpse puppet.
With the talismans in his hand crumpled from his grip, Heitianba frantically brainstormed for a solution.
To survive from the corpse puppet, he had to kill Yan Zhao!
The corpse puppet discarded Pang Da and immediately turned its focus to Heitianba.
Heitianba made up his mind, pushing off the ground with his feet and performing a backflip to evade the corpse puppet's attack.
Despite his seemingly elderly body, he moved remarkably fast, landing and pressing two fingers to his mouth to blow a whistle.
The poisonous snakes that had retreated to the courtyard's periphery upon hearing the whistle began to move again. They dared not approach the corpse puppet and instead swarmed toward Yan Zhao and Feng Jin.
