Crystal’s eyes fluttered open, and immediately, a pounding headache hit her like a freight train. She sat up, squinting as the room spun a little. “Ugh… what in the world happened last night?” She groaned, massaging her temples. “We were at that party… there was dancing, talking, and—oh right, that lady.” Her expression soured. “She made me so jealous!”
She frowned, trying to recall more, but the night was hazy. "And then… then I… drank?” Her eyes widened as the memory flashed in her mind. “Oh no, I drank!” She slapped her hand over her mouth, the shock settling in. “Oh no, did I do something crazy again? Like… like last time?” She cringed, squeezing her eyes shut, willing herself to remember.
“Come on, Crystal, think!” She urged herself, pressing her fingertips to her temples in concentration. “Okay, I remember us walking… and then…” A blurry image formed of Dimitri’s smirking face. “Dimitri!” she growled. “Of course he was making fun of me! Ugh, what did I do?”
Bits and pieces of the night came back in fragments. She recalled him holding her, carrying her… “Wait. Why was he carrying me?” She blushed furiously, biting her lip. And then, like a flash, she remembered it—the kiss.
Her eyes flew open as she gasped. “We kissed?!” she nearly yelled. “No, no, no! It can’t be true!” She shook her head frantically, the memories blurry and incomplete. “Why would we kiss? Did I… did I kiss him back?” She buried her face in her hands, groaning. “I wouldn’t! Would I? What if I did?”
Her mind raced as she ran through every possibility. “Okay, Crystal, let’s think this through logically. Why did we kiss? And why can’t I remember the important stuff?!” She threw her head back with a dramatic sigh, pouting. “And… oh no, was it good?” She fake-cried, covering her eyes in embarrassment.
“Calm down, Crystal,” she told herself, fanning her face. “Let’s just… rethink.” She squinted, concentrating hard, but nothing came. Finally, she looked up, pleading. “Please, brain! Just one hint!”
As she sat there, bewildered, her headache seemed to pulse in sync with her embarrassment.
