Crystal’s heart leaped at the sight of Dimitri, sitting just ahead with the man who had threatened her. He’s here, she thought, barely containing her relief. She called out softly, "Dimitri…" and quickened her pace to reach him.

But then, just as she neared, her smile vanished. His voice, cold and unfeeling, cut through her like a blade.

"She’s not my girlfriend,” Dimitri was saying, his tone indifferent. “I’m just using her."

Crystal froze, her whole world coming to a sudden, painful halt. What?

He continued, “I already have a fiancée. She’s nothing to me.”

The words echoed in her mind, each one a fresh wound. A tear slid down her cheek as the weight of his betrayal crushed her heart. All this time… he was lying to me?

Her thoughts spun, anger and heartbreak swirling within her.

She took a shaky step back, whispering to herself, “I will never forgive you…”

Just as she was about to confront him, a strong hand clamped over her mouth from behind. Panic surged as she struggled, muffled sounds escaping her lips. But then she heard a familiar whisper in her ear.

“Relax. It’s me.”

The voice made her still, but her heart kept pounding, both from fear and the painful realization that the one person she’d counted on had deceived her in the worst way.
