Elijah paced anxiously outside the operating room, his heart racing as he awaited news about Hazel. The fluorescent lights flickered overhead, intensifying the sterile atmosphere. He glanced at the clock, feeling the seconds stretch into eternity. Every tick echoed his growing concern.
Finally, the light above the operating room turned off, and the door swung open. The doctor stepped out, his face a mask of professionalism, but Elijah could see the weight of the news he carried.
“How was the surgery?” Elijah asked, his voice barely a whisper.
The doctor remained silent for a moment, his expression grave. “I’m sorry,” he finally said, the words hanging heavy in the air. “She lost her memories of her past .”
Elijah’s heart sank. “What?” he asked, his voice cracking. “What do you mean?”
The doctor continued, his tone somber. “Due to the surgery, she recovered from her illness, but we were late in performing it. The illness had already caused significant damage to her brain, and she might never be able to recover those memories.”
Elijah felt the ground shift beneath him, the reality of the situation crashing down like a tidal wave. “You can see her in an hour,” the doctor added, turning to leave.
Elijah stood frozen, still processing the situation, his mind racing with a mixture of hope and despair.
Just then, Crystal and Dimitri arrived, their expressions filled with anxiety. The doctor quickly explained the situation to them, his words a bitter echo of what Elijah had just heard.
As the doctor walked away, Crystal called out to Elijah, who was lost in thought. “Elijah?” she said softly, sitting down beside him.
He didn’t respond, his gaze fixed on the floor, lost in the memories of Hazel's laughter, her smile, everything that made her who she was.
“It’s better for her,” Dimitri said quietly, breaking the silence. “She’s suffered enough.”
Elijah suddenly stood, determination flooding his veins. “Where are you going?” Crystal asked, her brow furrowed with concern.
“To prepare a congratulations gift for her. She succeeded in surgery,” Elijah said, forcing a smile despite the turmoil inside him.
Dimitri and Crystal exchanged glances, their expressions a mix of confusion and admiration.
