Elijah cradled Crystal gently, her head resting against his shoulder, and moved toward the door with Dimitri close behind, their footsteps echoing softly in the empty corridor. Every corner felt like a trap, every shadow a lurking threat. The air was thick with tension as they moved cautiously, listening for any sign of Hazel’s dad’s men returning.

At the end of the hall, they came upon a narrow staircase leading down, but a set of voices floated up from below. Dimitri motioned for Elijah to pause, holding up a finger to his lips as the voices got louder.

“We need to find another way,” Dimitri whispered, scanning the area. They turned back and found a second corridor, dark and quieter. Dimitri took the lead, pressing onward as the corridor twisted and turned, finally leading them to a small storage room with a door that opened onto a back exit.

“We’re almost out,” he said, a glimmer of hope in his voice.

But as they reached the door, a low, mocking voice stopped them in their tracks.

“Leaving so soon?” One of Hazel’s dad’s henchmen stepped out from the shadows, a menacing grin on his face. Three more followed, blocking their way.

Dimitri’s hand curled into fists, his eyes darkening. “Get out of the way.”

The man laughed, his gaze sliding over to Elijah, who was still carrying Crystal. “Isn’t that sweet? Trying to escape with the boss’s precious target?”

Elijah carefully lowered Crystal onto the ground, stepping forward to shield her. “Touch her, and you’ll regret it,” he growled.

The henchman sneered. “Oh, you’re in no position to make threats.” He signaled his men, who moved in closer, weapons drawn.

Dimitri took a step forward, glancing at Elijah with a fierce determination. “Let’s end this,” he said, his voice low.

In an instant, Dimitri and Elijah sprang into action. Despite their injuries, the fight that ensued was brutal and intense. Dimitri ducked and swung, landing punches that left his opponents staggered. Elijah moved with deadly precision, each hit swift and calculated as they cleared a path back to Crystal.

One of the men lunged toward Crystal, reaching out to grab her, but Elijah reacted instantly, slamming the man back with a vicious punch. His eyes burned with protective rage as he kept his sister shielded.

After what felt like an eternity, the last of the henchmen fell, groaning as he hit the ground. Dimitri and Elijah stood there, breathing heavily, blood on their hands but victorious.

Elijah quickly scooped Crystal up again, glancing at Dimitri with a nod. “Let’s get out of here.”

They stumbled out into the night, the cool air hitting their faces as they finally made it out of the hell they’d been trapped in. Dimitri took one last glance back, a mix of relief and rage in his gaze.

As they disappeared into the shadows, only one thought lingered in his mind: Hazel’s dad may have lost this round, but the war was far from over.
