Dimitri clenched his jaw as he dialed Elijah’s number, his anger barely contained. The line clicked, and Elijah’s voice came through, calm and taunting.
“I’m coming for Hazel. You’d better send her back,” Dimitri demanded.
“In your dreams,” Elijah replied smoothly.
“Enough games, Elijah. You’ve got your sister. End this now,” Dimitri’s voice grew sharper, frustration spilling over.
Elijah chuckled darkly. “Oh, so you’ve found out, have you? Yet, I’m not sending Hazel back.”
Dimitri’s patience was wearing thin. “Listen to me—her father is fuming. He doesn’t know who took Hazel yet, but once he finds out, you know what he’s capable of. Give her back before this spirals.”
“Shame on you, Dimitri,” Elijah shot back, his voice laced with bitterness. “Not once have you asked about Crystal. How she doing ? Is she OK? Was she worth so little to you? All you care about is your fiancée.”
“I’m not in the mood for this, Elijah,” Dimitri replied, his voice strained.
“Neither am I. You never loved my sister. I always knew it.” Elijah’s voice dripped with disdain, each word cutting like a blade.
Dimitri’s temper flared. “Enough with your self-righteous lectures.”
“But did you really need to make it so obvious?” Elijah asked, his voice lowering. “She heard it all. She knows you were just using her, Dimitri. She’ll never forgive you. And I’ll make sure of it.”
Dimitri froze. “What... what are you talking about , what she heard ?”
“Everything you and Hazel’s father discussed—about using her. She heard it all.”
Dimitri’s mind raced. “She must have misunderstood.”
“Oh, no. We heard it perfectly clear,” Elijah sneered. “I didn’t want her to suffer any longer, so I took her away.”
Dimitri’s voice rose, his control slipping. “You heard nothing!” he shouted.
And with that, he ended the call, seething with frustration and dread.
