The hours dragged on , shadows stretching across the room as the men stationed to watch Dimitri, Elijah, and Crystal grew restless.

“I’m starving. Let’s go grab something to eat,” one of the men muttered, casting a glance at his partner.

“Are you out of your mind?” the other snapped back. “If the boss finds out we left them alone, he’ll kill us. Did you already forget what he did earlier?”

The first man shrugged, glancing dismissively at Crystal, who was slumped against the wall, barely conscious. “It’s been hours. Look at her; she’s out of it. And the others? Tied up tight. I doubt they’re going anywhere.”

His partner hesitated, but with enough prodding, he reluctantly agreed, and the two left the room. As soon as their footsteps faded, Dimitri’s focus snapped to Elijah.

“Now’s our chance. Let’s get Crystal out of here,” Dimitri whispered, immediately starting to work on the ropes binding his wrists.

“Didn’t need your suggestion,” Elijah replied, already freeing his own hands. they made quick work of the ropes—years in the mafia had honed their skills for moments like these.

Once free, Dimitri moved toward Crystal, but Elijah blocked his path, stretching his arm out in warning. “Stay away from my sister,” he said coldly.

“I’m trying to help,” Dimitri shot back, a flash of irritation in his eyes.

“I can save my sister myself,” Elijah insisted, his gaze hard.

A silent, tense moment passed between them, anger flashing in Dimitri’s eyes. But Elijah turned away, determined to focus on his sister rather than the man standing beside him.

Elijah knelt beside Crystal, speaking softly as he tried to wake her, but her head only lolled to the side, exhaustion and bruises from the ordeal making her unresponsive. Gently, he moved behind her, carefully loosening the ropes from her swollen, bruised wrists. The sight of her injuries made anger burn hot in Dimitri’s chest, fists clenched at his sides.

“Crystal,” Elijah murmured, positioning himself in front of her again, his voice tight with worry. “Wake up.”

“She’s too exhausted,” Dimitri interrupted, frustration creeping into his voice. “We’ll have to carry her.”

“I didn’t ask for your opinion,” Elijah snapped back, glaring.

Dimitri rolled his eyes, disbelief and frustration mixing as he tried to rein in his anger.
