Crystal sat on the bed, her head buried in her hands as tears streamed down her face. Dimitri’s mother gently rubbed her back, trying to comfort her.
“What happened, Crystal?” his mother asked softly.
Through her sobs, Crystal whispered, almost as if talking to Dimitri rather than his mother. “I wasn’t lying. I’m not… I’m not in love with him.” She wiped her cheeks but the tears kept coming, her voice shaking with frustration and confusion. “I just… I don’t know,” she said, her voice faltering as a hint of doubt crept in.
“Calm down, dear,” his mother said soothingly.
Crystal took a deep breath, but her mind was racing. “He’s always in such a rush, expecting me to understand things I don’t even remember. I don’t even know what happened last night! How does he expect me to accept what I don’t even remember saying?” Her frustration boiled over, her voice rising. “He says I told him I was falling in love, but I have no idea why I would say that!”
Dimitri’s mother studied her for a moment. “So… you really don’t love him?” she asked carefully.
Crystal looked away, her fingers twisting nervously. “I don’t know,” she whispered. “I don’t know what I feel.”
“Is there nothing there?” his mother pressed gently, her voice laced with curiosity.
Crystal’s face twisted with uncertainty. “I… I don’t know. Maybe there’s something,” she admitted, barely above a whisper. “But it’s all too much. He keeps pushing, and I feel like I’m losing myself. Just… tell him to let me go,” she said, her voice cracking. “I can’t take it anymore. I feel like I’ll go crazy at this rate.”
Dimitri’s mother wrapped her arms around Crystal, pulling her close. “Shh… relax,” she murmured. “Let’s take this one step at a time. Just breathe, Crystal. It’s going to be okay.”
