The Mikaelson compound shimmered in its full holiday splendor. A lavish Christmas tree adorned the center of the grand hall, with delicate twinkling lights casting soft, golden reflections on the marble floors. The faint scent of pine and spices lingered in the air as the laughter and conversations of their guests swirled around the room. The Mikaelsons, infamous for their darkness and chaos, looked almost... normal tonight. It was a rare and fleeting moment that Elijah Mikaelson knew he should savor.
He stood on the balcony, watching the festivities below. His dark eyes lingered over the gathering, studying his family with a sense of bittersweet contentment. Klaus was reveling in the chaos, charming the guests and, undoubtedly, causing trouble. Rebekah was floating through the crowd like a vision of light, her laughter as radiant as the Christmas lights around her. Even Kol seemed to have put his usual mischief aside for the evening, engaging in conversation with someone far too boring for his taste.
But it was the emptiness of solitude that seemed to surround Elijah, even in a room full of people. The silence of the balcony was his only companion, and for a moment, he allowed himself to feel the weight of centuries spent in isolation.
"Nice to have a bit of normalcy, isn't it?"
Her voice was soft, but it cut through the quiet like a melody. Elijah turned, already knowing who it was.
Y/N Y/L/N. She stepped onto the balcony, her presence almost ethereal, as if she belonged to the world of myths and legends. Her emerald gown shimmered under the soft glow of the lights, the fabric hugging her curves and flowing effortlessly around her. Her Y/H/C hair was elegantly styled, a few loose tendrils framing her face in delicate curls. She looked like something out of a dream, and in that moment, Elijah couldn't look away.
"Normalcy, yes," Elijah murmured, his voice low and gravelly, his gaze fixing on her. "Though I fear it's something that won't last."
She tilted her head, a playful smile tugging at her lips as she stepped closer, leaning slightly over the railing, her eyes tracing the party below. "It's funny, really. For a family as... unconventional as yours, this is surprisingly warm. Christmas dinner, dancing, laughter. It's not something we get to enjoy often is it?"
Her words lingered in the air, and Elijah couldn't help but be struck by the tenderness in her voice. She was right, of course. It was human. For once, it felt like they were more than the ancient creatures they were-like they belonged to a world they had long abandoned. And yet, the moment was bittersweet. He didn't want it to end.
He cleared his throat softly, a faint smile playing at his lips as he regarded her. "I suppose even monsters like us can indulge in such things for a night."
Y/N/N looked up at him then, her gaze meeting his with an intensity that made his heart skip a beat. She took a small step toward him, her voice dropping to a soft, intimate tone. "Perhaps that's what makes it all the more precious... knowing it won't last."
Elijah held her gaze, the words sticking in his throat. He had seen so many things in his life-war, betrayal, love, and loss-but nothing in his long existence had ever felt quite like this. The weight of the years he had lived, of the countless battles he had fought, suddenly seemed insignificant compared to this one simple truth: Y/N was standing before him, and he wanted nothing more than to hold this moment forever.
"Care for a dance?" he asked, his voice low and filled with a longing he could no longer hide.
Y/N's lips curled into a smile, one full of warmth and something deeper-something more than just playful amusement. She stepped closer to him, her hand reaching for his with a quiet, almost reverent grace. "I thought you'd never ask."
He gently took her hand in his, and together they descended into the heart of the hall. The crowd parted, the soft strains of a waltz floating through the air. The world around them seemed to fall away as they moved in perfect synchrony, their bodies drawn together by an invisible force.
Elijah's hand rested on the small of her back, pulling her slightly closer as their steps guided them across the floor. Her hand rested on his shoulder, and for a fleeting moment, he allowed himself to close his eyes, feeling the rhythm of her breath, the warmth of her body against his. They swirled around the dance floor like two souls lost in time, the music and the world fading into the background.
For a moment, there was no war, no betrayal, no centuries of suffering. There was only the two of them, the soft rustle of her gown, the delicate pressure of her hand in his. It was as if the universe had paused, giving them this rare chance to simply be.
"You make it seem so easy," Y/N whispered, her voice a soft sigh against his ear as they glided together. "Like we were meant to do this all along."
Elijah's chest tightened, and he glanced down at her, his heart caught between the beauty of the moment and the harsh reality of what they were. "Perhaps... we were," he said quietly, his voice raw with emotion.
The music swelled, and for the first time in a long while, Elijah allowed himself to be swept away by the emotion that surged through him. He pulled her closer, their bodies perfectly aligned, and he could feel her heartbeat echo in his own. The world outside their embrace seemed to disappear entirely.
"I'm glad we have this," he murmured, his lips brushing her forehead, a whisper against her skin. "Even if it is just for a small moment in time."
Y/N/N's fingers gently traced the line of his jaw as she tilted her head up to meet his eyes. Her gaze was soft, but there was a spark of something intense in her look-a promise, maybe, or a question.
"I wouldn't trade it for anything," she whispered.
And for that fleeting moment, Elijah allowed himself to believe in something more-something beyond the ancient curse that bound him, something that transcended the darkness of his past. In her arms, he felt as though he could finally be free.
Their dance continued, the world of the Mikaelsons and the holiday cheer far below them, but in that one moment, there was nothing but the warmth of each other's presence.
