Y/N stood in the center of the dusty, dimly lit plantation house, her brow furrowed in concentration. Candles flickered in a perfect circle around her, their flames trembling as if sensing the volatile energy in the room. In front of her, two vampires-courtesy of Klaus and Marcel-stood frozen, their movements restricted by the binding spell she'd carefully crafted. Sweat beaded on her forehead as she whispered the incantation, her voice steady despite the exhaustion creeping in.
The goal was ambitious-banish rogue vampires to a separate realm, one from which they couldn't return. It was a solution to New Orleans' endless turmoil, one Y/N had poured weeks of relentless effort into perfecting. The strain, however, was beginning to show.
"Y/N, love," a familiar voice drawled from the doorway, smooth as honey and tinged with concern. Kol leaned against the frame, arms crossed over his chest. His dark eyes swept over her, taking in the pale complexion and slight tremble in her hands. "You've gone and buried yourself in your work again, haven't you?"
She didn't respond immediately, her focus still on the spell. The air in the room thickened, and the vampires she'd been using as test subjects vanished for a fleeting moment before reappearing, dazed but unharmed.
Y/N cursed under her breath, slumping into the nearest chair. "I was so close this time," she murmured, running a hand through her hair.
Kol approached her, his expression softening as he crouched in front of her. "Darling, you've been at this for weeks. Even the most brilliant witch can't work magic if she's too tired to stand. You need a break."
Her Y/E/C eyes met his, defiance flickering within them. "I don't have time for a break, Kol. If I can perfect this spell, it'll change everything. Klaus and Marcel are counting on me."
Kol cupped her face gently, his thumb brushing over her cheek. "And I'm counting on you to not drive yourself into the ground. Let Klaus and Marcel deal with their problems for a few days. I've already made arrangements to take you away."
Y/N frowned. "Away? Where?"
His lips curled into a mischievous grin. "Italy. Venice, to be precise. It's been too long since we've been there, and I happen to recall it's one of your favorite places. The vineyards, the canals, the gelato..." He leaned closer, his voice dropping to a whisper. "You can't say no to gelato, can you?"
Despite herself, a small smile tugged at her lips. "Kol, you're too sweet."
"Only for you, love," he quipped, standing and holding out his hand. "Pack your bags. We leave tonight."
Y/N hesitated, glancing back at the spell circle and the scattered books around her. The weight of her work pressed against her, but Kol's warm, earnest gaze made her pause. He was right-she was wearing herself thin. And if she didn't recharge, the spell might never succeed.
She took his hand, letting him pull her to her feet. "Fine. But if Klaus throws a tantrum about this, I'm blaming you."
Kol laughed, pressing a kiss to her knuckles. "Oh, I'd expect nothing less."
Two days later, Y/N found herself standing on a balcony overlooking Venice's Grand Canal, the golden glow of sunset painting the city in warm hues. The gentle lapping of water and the distant melodies of gondoliers filled the air, a stark contrast to the tense silence of the plantation house.
Kol appeared beside her, holding two glasses of wine. "See? Isn't this better than chanting in a dusty old house?"
Y/N took the glass, leaning into his side. "I hate it when you're right."
He smirked, wrapping an arm around her. "It's a rare occurrence, so savor it while you can."
As they stood together, the worries of New Orleans felt a world away. For the first time in weeks, Y/N allowed herself to breathe, to rest. Kol had given her what she didn't realize she desperately needed-a moment to simply be. And with him by her side, she felt ready to face whatever challenges awaited her back home.
