The call came in just after midnight.
My phone buzzed on the nightstand, the glow of the screen cutting through the darkness. I considered ignoring it-after all, I wasn't exactly keen on answering for anyone at this hour. But something made me reach for it anyway.
YN.
My stomach twisted uneasily. We weren't exactly close-hadn't been for years, her entire life, really. Too many fights, too much stubbornness on both sides. But something about the way her name lit up my screen sent a cold chill crawling down my spine because she never called me.
So I answered.
"YNN?"
"Damon!" Her voice hit me like a gut punch-frantic, breathless, and terrified.
"Hey, hey-what's going on?" I shot upright, the urgency in her tone jolting me fully awake.
"I-I don't know what happened!" she stammered, her breath ragged. "I was at a party, and then we - we were attacked," Her voice broke off into a harsh sob.
My heart lurched.
"Where are you?" I demanded, already shoving on my boots.
"I-I don't know! I ran into the woods! They're everywhere!" she gasped. "I can't-I can't outrun them."
"I'm on my way," I said firmly, already out the door and moving faster than my mind could process.
"I'm scared," she whispered.
"I know," I muttered, picking up speed. "Just hold on."
I pushed harder, the world blurring past me as I ran. I didn't care about anything else-only getting to her. She was family. And nobody-nobody-hurt my family.
The scent of blood hit me first-sharp, metallic, unmistakable. My stomach turned.
Then I saw her.
YN stood in the middle of a small clearing, her back pressed against a tree, her breath coming in shallow gasps. She looked pale, her face streaked with dirt and tears. Blood dripped from a shallow cut on her forehead, and her hands trembled at her sides.
But worse than that... she wasn't alone.
The vampires surrounding her were dressed like something out of a history book-Victorian suits and dresses, polished and pristine despite the fact that they looked like they'd just stepped out of a grave. Or more like a specific tomb. Their eyes gleamed red in the moonlight, their fangs bared in wicked grins.
They had her cornered.
I didn't stop to think. I acted on instinct alone.
The first vampire never saw me coming. I grabbed him by the back of the head and twisted sharply. His neck snapped like dry wood, and he crumpled to the ground.
The next one lunged at me, but I grabbed a broken tree branch from the ground and drove it through his chest. His body collapsed in a cloud of ash.
"Damon!" YN's voice broke through the chaos, sharp and panicked.
I turned in time to see one of them grab her by the arm, dragging her toward the trees.
"Oh no, you don't," I growled.
I moved faster than thought, tearing the vampire away from her and slamming him into a tree. Before he could react, I buried my hand in his chest and ripped his heart out.
Blood sprayed across my shirt as the body crumpled to the ground.
The remaining vampires hesitated, their cocky grins faltering as they realized they weren't winning this fight. But I didn't give them a chance to run. I snapped another neck, drove a splintered branch into another's heart, and threw the last one into a nearby boulder hard enough to shatter bone. Didn't kill him but it was enough to shout a warning and watch him dart away.
