Flash back

It was my first year at Hogwarts, a day I've been waiting for as long as I can remember. I stood anxiously waiting for my name to be called.

Finally the strict women in dark green robes called my name "Mackenzie Black."

The women who called me, I was told was named Professor McGonagall. I heard from my brother she seemed rough and strict, but is a real teddy bear. She's one of his favorite professors.

I walk up to the stool and Professor McGonagall and she places the hat on my head. Not really caring what was going on around me I was immersed in my own thoughts.

The row of four tables out in front of me, hundreds of faces waiting and looking at me in anticipation. I spot the table with the people I am most familiar with, clad in Green and Silver. My oldest brother Regulus, a fifth year, sat among our cousins. Narcissa Black, a second year and quite possibly my best friend. Her sister Bellatrix, a third year, sat beside her twisting her hair boredly. I spotted my other cousin Adnormeda at the end of the table, by herself. Although she's in Slytherin like most of my family, she's different, and that maybe why Sirius is drawn to her.

My eyes glaze over the tables in yellow and black and blue and bronze until stopping on a table dressed with Red and gold. Sirius, my misfit brother a third year, sat grinning goofily at me. He was considered a traitor, it was crime in my family to be anything but in Slytherin. Next to my brother is his best friend James Potter, I've never met him but I've heard so much about him it seems like I've known him forever. On the other side of Sirius is a tall lanky boy names Remus Lupin. He's one of my brother's best friends too. Sirius talks about him very vaguely. And sounds to me like he has a weak immune system as he is sick at least once  a month. Another boy is next to James, a plump one at that. He's a face I've only seen in pictures in Sirius' room. His name is Peter something. Sirius doesn't talk about him much unless he's talking about his friends as a group.

The hat pulls me out of my own little world by shouting, "Gryffindor!"

I hope off smiling and make my way to the table where my brother Sirius and his friends are clapping loudly.

"Way to go Kenzie!" Sirius exclaims pulling me into a hug.

Once Sirius releases me I turn to see his friends staring.

James speaks first, "So your the famous sister, Sirius has been going on and on about."

"Yea," I chuckle, "Mackenzie."

"James Potter."

I am then introduced to Remus and Peter. James makes some run on the bench and I sit in between my brother and James. The sorting finishes and the food appears, all of us digging in.

While eating, a girl, with fiery red hair, introduced herself as Lily Evans. To which James added "My future girlfriend"

This comment earned a glare from Lily. Throughout the meal I learned more about Lily and my brother's friends. All of them were third years, and Lily and Remus were exceptionally bright. James has a had a crush on Lily since he first met her but he was mean to one of her friends, a current Slytherin, thus ruining his chances of ever being with her.

Dinner ended and the three boys showed me to the common room with Peter waddling behind. The common room was behind the fat lady portrait. The password, Rutabaga, was the only way to get in.

It was getting late as I stayed with my brother and his three friends in the common room talking and laughing by the dying fire. I knew certain hell would await for me when my parents found out what house I was sorted. But right now with James and Sirius making faces, Remus smiling trying to keep a straight face, and Peter dozing off I knew I was going to be okay.
