About halfway through the car ride, Anna got a call from the doctor.
Hello?
Yes.
I can pick it up right now?
Ok. I'll see if I can make it today.
Thank you so much.
Bye.
Anna hung up the phone. "Hey Chloe, can we maybe make a quick five minute stop at the doctors office?"
"Yeah I'm pretty sure we have time. Why?"
"The doctor has some sort of boot thing I can put over my cast to walk on!"
"So you'll be able to walk tonight?" Beca asked.
"Yeah I guess so."
"That's great," Chloe said, pulling into the doctors office. "I'll run in for you."
Chloe came back out five minutes later with a boot for Anna. "Ok, so you put it on over your cast, and you can't walk in it for more than 2 hours, and he recommended you don't wear a high heeled shoe with it because you'll limp more and it will be harder to get back to walking normally.
"Crap, then I can't wear it then. I'm wearing like five inch heels."
"Oh," Beca said, "I have the flats I was going to wear in my bag."
"Oh my gosh you're a life saver." Anna looked relieved as she slipped the boot on.
When Chloe parked the car, Beca got out to get her bag from the trunk. "Here you go," she said handing a shoe to Anna.
"Thanks," Anna said, climbing out of the car. "Ooh it kind of hurts, and I can't bend my leg, but it's still better than crutches." Anna limped to the trunk to get her bag.
Chloe grabbed her bag and the crutches. "We might want to bring these just in case," Chloe said as she grabbed the crutches.
"Yeah," Beca said. We don't want you falling in the middle of the restaurant."
"Oh my god that would be so embarrassing!" Anna laughed. "Hey, can I have the crutches for balance? I feel like I'm going to fall, plus I want to put a little bit less weight on my foot.
Chloe handed her the crutches. "You doing ok?"
"Yeah it just kind of hurts."
They walked in and introduced each other to their dates. "Hey Corey," Chloe said. "These are my friends, Beca and Anna."
"Hi," Anna said.
Beca smiled at Corey. She had seen him at PetSmart before and thought Chloe would like him. "Hi."
Ben walked in a few minutes later. He was surprised to see Anna sort of walking. "Wow, so they gave you a boot."
"Sort of, but I feel like I can't put any weight on it." The hostess led the group to the table. Beca stayed behind to walk with Anna. "Beca, it really hurts," Anna winced.
"Try to use the crutches more than your leg," Beca said. "Can you stick it out for 2 hours?"
"I guess," Anna said, sitting down next to Ben.
Beca sat down next to an empty chair. Jesse wasn't there yet. Her phone rang, and she excused herself from the table.
Hey. Where are you.
Beca, I'm so sorry. I can't make it. I'm behind on this movie, and an emergency meeting was scheduled for 20 minutes from now. I'll make it up to you.
No, it's ok, don't worry about it. I have to get going, but don't worry. Text me later. Love you
Love you to, Becs, I'm so sorry.
Beca hung up. She was really hurt that Jesse was missing such an important night. She walked back to the table. "Jesse can't make it. There was an emergency meeting at his work."
"Oh," Anna said. "Sorry, Becs."
Chloe turned to her friend. "I have to go to the bathroom. Do you wanna help me find it, Beca."
"Yeah." She walked with Chloe to the bathroom. When they got in there, Beca got really upset. "I can't believe he would do this to me. I was so looking forward to this and he ruined it for me. Our careers will always get in the way of our relationship and that will definitely break us up." Beca started crying.
"Becs, I'm so sorry. He shouldn't just leave you with such short notice." Chloe hugged her friend. "If you want to leave, we can go home. I know how it feels to third wheel and it sucks."
"No," Beca said through the tears. "I want you and Anna to enjoy your night. I'll stay."
Chloe pulled her makeup bag out of her purse. "Let's fix you up."
After about five minutes, the girls came out of the bathroom, and Beca looked good as new. "Sorry it took forever, there was a long line." Beca had lied to the entire table but she didn't care. She ordered her food and sat quietly while the rest of the group engaged in conversations. She didn't have anything to talk about, so why would she bother talking. Every now and then, Chloe would glance at her to make sure she was ok. Beca would glance back with a smirk to show she was fine.
After dinner, they all said goodbye, and Chloe and Beca drove off. Chloe made a turn at the light, and that wasn't the way to go home. "What are you doing?" Beca asked.
"I'm stopping at Magnolia to make it up to you. I feel really bad that you had to sit through dinner so upset." Chloe smiled. "Do you want to go in. We can eat in there."
"Definitely. I'm starving. That food was shit at Le Pepe. What a waste of $200."
"I know. The atmosphere was still nice though." They walked into the cupcake place, and they both got red velvet like usual. Chloe sat down in a booth across from Beca.
She looked really upset.
"What's wrong Chloe?" Beca looked at her friend. She wondered how she could be upset after her first date.
"I don't know. I didn't really enjoy my time with Corey that much. I don't think we have that much in common. We didn't really talk that much. I really just talked to Anna."
"It was my fault. You were worried about me the whole time. You couldn't focus." Beca was disappointed she ruined her best friend's first date."
"Beca, it wasn't your fault Jesse ditched you."
"I know, but I kind of made it awkward for everyone. It sucks that he didn't make time for me. That was a dick move."
"He's leaving in a week after the movie is over. Right?"
"Yeah. I don't know what we're going to after he goes back."
"I think you'll be ok. You know what broke you guys up the first time, so just don't do that."
"Thanks, Chlo," Beca said, throwing out the cupcake wrappers and putting on her jacket. It was still pretty cold for the middle of March.
"We're going over to Anna's tomorrow to help with chores." Chloe put on her jacket.
"Ok," Beca said. To be honest, she was kind of getting sick of going over there every day.
The girls drove home and went to bed.
