"Bye, guys, I love you so much!" Beca called from the gates at the airport. Chloe had left for work already, and Beca still had to go to Anna's house. After she lost sight of them, she drove to Anna's house.
"Hey, Anna," she said, walking in.
"Hey, Becs, I'm in the kitchen!"
Beca walked into the kitchen. "How are you feeling?"
"I puked once, but it's just morning sickness. Other than that, I feel fine. I have my first doctor's appointment this afternoon. Can you take me?"
"Of course. As long as you're feeling well enough, I'm thinking we should go to the mall and get you some maternity clothes. I made the mistake of not getting any at first, and you don't want to do that. I'll take you out for lunch. It'll be fun."
"Thanks so much, Becs. I'll just fix my hair and I'll be ready."
Anna came out of the bathroom with her hair in a messy bun. "I couldn't do anything with it, so I don't care."
"That's ok," Beca said, "I wore sweats and Jesse's tee shirts every day."
Anna laughed. "Where do you want to go for lunch? I'm craving tacos."
"Taco Bell it is!"
Beca and Anna got into her car and they drove off. "You know," Beca said, "you don't have a baby bump yet, so that's pretty cool."
Anna chuckled. "Yeah. That's why I need the maternity clothes. I'm already getting fat though."
"Anna, you're so skinny already, it's barely noticeable yet. I'm so mad, I still haven't lost the weight."
"That gives me hope, because I can't even tell you gained any weight."
"Thanks so much! That's the nicest thing I've ever heard. What do you want to eat?"
"That nacho burrito thing. I'm starving."
"Oh cool. It's pretty good. Go get a table I'll order."
Beca brought the food back to the table, and she handed the burrito to Anna. She devoured it in literally 1 minute. Beca laughed. "Oh yeah, and some days, you can't get enough food, and others, you won't want to eat a thing."
"Ugh it's so much effort."
After they ate, they drove to the doctor to get Anna's first ultrasound. She was really nervous at first, but Beca tried to calm her down. "Ann, it's the first one. Everything is gonna be fine.Erin is your doctor, and she knows you so well, you'll be fine."
"Ok, I'll try to breathe."
Erin came in and took the ultrasound. When the picture appeared on the screen, she froze. "Um, Anna, you're having triplets."
"What?"
Beca smiled. "Oh my gosh Anna that's so exciting I'm so happy for you!"
"Ok...um...wow..thanks Erin. Can I have the pictures?"
Erin handed the pictures to Anna. "You'll be ok. I promise."
"Thanks Erin."
Anna and Beca left and went to the mall. Anna was silent the entire car ride, and she barely said a word at the store. Beca picked out a bunch of clothes. "What do you think of this?" She held up a shirt.
"It's fine."
"How about a pair of jeans?"
"Ok."
"What shoe size are you?"
"Seven."
"Ok, you can have my old shoes. They're basically old lady shoes with memory foam."
"Thanks."
"I'm gonna go pay."
"Ok."
Beca came back a few minutes later. "Ready to go?"
"Yeah." Anna was so quiet.
They drove home in silence, and when they got back to Anna's, Beca made her lay down. "Anna, seriously, what's wrong? You've barely said a word since we left the doctor?"
Anna took a deep breath. "Beca, I don't even know how to raise one child, let alone three. I'm not even sure the first one will survive. I can't lose three, Becs, that would kill me. I'm too young for this. I don't feel ready."
"Anna, you're 33. I was 25. I know you'll be ok. Everything will work out. I promise, you'll be an amazing mom. You won't lose them. You're doing a lot better, I can tell."
"It's just too much. I can't even tell Ben. I'm so worried."
"Do you want me to tell him for you? You gotta tell him somehow."
"Ok. Go ahead. I need to let him know."
"Ok."
Hey, Ben it's Beca.
Hey, what's up. Is Anna ok?
Yeah, but we have some news, and Anna's too anxious to talk.
What is it?
She's having triplets.
That great!
I know! But she's really worried.
Tell her I'll talk to her when she's ok. Tell her I got to Colorado ok.
Alright, thanks Ben.
Bye.
"He's excited, Ann. It'll be ok. He said to call him when you're up to it. How are you feeling?"
Anna was crying a little bit. Beca thought she was too stressed out. "I'm ok. I'm just so anxious, I have a stomach ache and my head hurts."
"Do you want to take something?"
"It's just nerves, Becs. It's all too much. I don't know if I can handle it all."
"Tell you what. I'll get you some ginger ale to settle your stomach, and you can take a nap so your head feels better."
"Thanks, Becs. It's so sweet what you're doing for me. I couldn't ask for a better friend."
Beca handed Anna a cup of ginger ale. "It's no problem, Ann. Just try and get some sleep, ok. Even a little nap will make you feel so much better."
"Ok. Thanks."
As Anna closed her eyes, Beca stared at her friend. She thought about how different things would be if they hadn't met. Something struck her about Anna. She could tell she was lonely. Even though she was the only one of the three that was married, Ben wasn't around a lot, and that was hard for her. Anna was a gorgeous person inside and out. She had such a big heart, and only she and Chloe could make her into a softie. She was 5' 3", and she had dark brown hair with highlights, and she had gorgeous green eyes. Her eyes were so noticeable because of the dark makeup she wore. She was pretty pale, but it didn't matter because she basically lived inside. She wasn't an outdoorsy person. She was always a sarcastic little bitch, maybe more than Beca, but she was more subtle with it. Only Beca noticed. She wanted to be a teacher. She had gone to school to be a teacher, but it never happened. It made Beca sad that her friend's dreams didn't come true. She dozed off next to her friend, thinking about how lucky she was to have amazing people in her life.
