Harper quietly walked in the room behind Beca. Beca picked her up and carried her over to the bed. "It's ok, baby girl, it's ok."
Harper turned towards Chloe and started bawling. "Mama, she's so sick."
"I know, sweetie, it'll be ok, do you want to say anything to her?"
Harper nodded and Beca sat her down on the chair next to the bed. Harper rubbed Chloe's arm as she spoke to her. "Aunt Chloe, I love you so much, and mommy says you might die and I'm scared, please stay here forever. I don't want you to die, and momma says we have to pray so I will because I want you to be here with us." Harper's tears rolled down her face onto Chloe's arm. Beca was crying too. "Ok, do you want to go now?"
Harper nodded and followed Beca out of the room back to Emily's room. Beca sat her down across from Emily on the bed. Emily smiled. "They decided my knee injury wasn't enough for crutches, so I can just get a brace! I'll be able to walk around!"
"Oh that's great," Beca said with a half-hearted smile.
"Is Chloe ok?"
"Yeah, I'm just worried, you know."
Erin came back to check her vital signs. "You're all good, Em. We're just gonna keep you over night to make sure."
"Great! Do I have to take anything?"
"No, just painkillers for your ribs. How are they feeling?"
"Horrible, but that's what I expected."
"Ok, they should heal up on they're own. Beca, have you been with Chloe recently?"
"Yeah, I just took Harper in there, it was pretty rough for her."
"Was she ok about it though?"
"She's still pretty shaken up, but I think she'll be ok. I was gonna ask, so she's recovering from her pneumonia, what if she can't breathe when they take her off it?"
"We're putting medicine from the inhaler into her breathing machine. That's really all we can do, and I was talking to the specialist, and he said she doesn't-"
"Have a chance? Right? She doesn't have a chance, and tomorrow night, I'm going to watch my best friend die. Right? That's what you're saying? I'm trying so hard to be strong for her and stay optimistic, and all I'm hearing is that she is going to die." Beca started sobbing. "I can't do this, I can't stay positive when my best friend is laying there dying and there's nothing you can do." Erin walked her over to the chair and sat her down.
"Hey, listen, it's ok. What I was going to say was that they said she doesn't have a reason not to live, it's just that sometimes the accident is so bad it sends the body into shock and that's it."
Beca slowed down her crying a little bit. "So she has a chance?"
"Yep, I think so, and she's a persistent little thing. I told her so many times to go home and get some sleep and that I would stay with you when you were in her place, and she was so persistent, she didn't leave at all."
Beca swallowed and smiled a little. "Yeah, she's funny that way."
Emily laughed. "There's that smile!"
Beca laughed sadly. "Yeah, she makes me happy, I mean we're like sisters, heck, we are sisters. She's helped me through so much, and her attitude through all of it has kept me smiling. It's so hard not having her talking to me, and it's going to be so hard if she doesn't make it and it'll be pretty hard if she doesn't remember anything. I mean what if her personality is different, or she doesn't like me?"
