Chapter 43

'You asleep yet?' Luke tiredly whispered.
He was determined to stay awake until I had fallen asleep but he had been struggling for the last 40 minutes.
'No' I replied, getting my head off his chest to look at his face.
His eyes were shut and his mouth was hanging half open, his breathing was slowly becoming more heavy, indicating that he was close to falling asleep and then he woke himself up again.
He had been doing this for hours because he wanted to make sure I was actually getting some sleep.
I sighed and laid back down.
'Okay' Luke mumbled, 'Neither am I'
I smiled 'You should just go to sleep I'll be fine'
'Nope, not going to happen'
Closing my eyes, I stirred for a second, wrapping my leg around Luke's.
'Is she still squirming around in there?' Luke asked.
I shook my head 'I think she's sleeping now'
Stirring around some more, I felt something leaking again and I sighed.
I had been trying to tell him about this the entire night but every time I opened my mouth, I couldn't get the words out.
It hadn't stopped since it started this morning and it terrified me.
Taking a deep breath, I opened my mouth again, trying as hard as I could to push the words out before I could change my mind again, but all that left my mouth was a quiet: 'Luke?'
'Hm?' Luke said.
'I have to tell you something'
The courage was slowly starting to leave my body and I knew that if I would just shut up, he would fall asleep and won't remember a thing in the morning, but I also knew I wasn't going to be able to fall asleep if I kept this inside.
'Can we call a doctor again tomorrow?' I asked.
'Ehm...yeah, why?' Luke replied and at this point I was happy that he was half asleep because he didn't have the energy to freak out.
'I just...this morning, when we were in the car, something started...leaking' I said, my voice just above a whisper.
'What do you mean?' Luke asked, struggling his eyes open and slightly lifting his head up to look at me.
'Well, just like I said, something started leaking and I have no idea what it is but I'm not sure if I can trust it'
Luke laid his head down, his eyes falling shut again.
'Shouldn't we call a doctor now then?'
'Can we? I mean...it's 2am I'm pretty sure you can only call for emergencies now'
Luke was quiet for a minute, before opening his mouth again and mumbling some more words.
'You don't think this is an emergency?'
I thought about that for a few seconds and shook my head.
'It's been going on all day, I think I'll be okay for a few more hours. That stinging pain hasn't gotten worse either. Besides, you can barely even form normal sentences anymore so you should get some sleep'
Luke nodded, carefully pulling me back against his chest.
'Wake me up if something's wrong okay?'
'I will, I promise' I said.
'Goodnight gorgeous'
I smiled, wrapping my arm around his torso and sighing in relief.
'Goodnight' I replied, trying to think of something to call him but not able to think of something cute and original in time.
It only took a few minutes for Luke's breathing to slow down as he quietly fell asleep.
I placed my hand on my baby bump, feeling our little baby girl softly kicking again.
Closing my eyes, I focused on Luke's heartbeat that I could hear through his chest and our baby girl kicking against my hand and I slowly felt myself drift off to sleep.
Knowing she was still kicking gave me the reassurance that she was okay and we didn't have to call the doctor until tomorrow morning.
It calmed down my nerves until I eventually fell asleep, focused on the two people I cared about most in the world, and one of them wasn't even breathing on her own yet.
