Through it All

Chapter 4

Cheyenne's POV:

As Sally leaves Nate walks into my office and shuts the door, I look up and ask him what is going on and he replies for me to get my purse and come with him. I start to get a little pissed off at this , I haven't heard from him in over 2 months and he waltzs in and starts telling me what to do, I don't think so. I asked him again what is going on and he just looks at me and tells me to just get my things and come on that he would tell me when I got in the car. I don't know what to think but I know whatever is going on cannot be good.

As Nate opens the door Liz is standing there looking all pissy. Nate has my arm and is leading me out of the building and Liz follows us asking what is going on and what are we doing. Nate tells her to talk to Mr.Brown and continues to lead me out to his patrol car. He opens the passenger door and helps me in the car. He walks around and gets in the car, when I turn to him and say "now tell me what is going on." Nate turns to me and says, " I know that you are a strong woman and I hate to have to tell you but there has been an accident at the plant, and Robert has been taken to the ER. The police in Ragsdale contacted me and said Robert told them to contact me to get you and meet him at the hospital."

I am speechless because I know it has to be bad for Robert to get them to send Nate after me. I look at Nate and ask him how bad was it, what happened and how do I tell my kids all rapid fire. Nate tells me to breathe that we will find out when we get to the hospital. He then turns flips the switch and both lights and sirens start as he tears out of the parking lot. He tells me all that he knows it that Robert said for him to get me and meet them at the hospital.

I look off and just stare out the window with all the thought running through my head, what am I going to do? Robert is my life, we have been together since I was 16 and he was 24. I start praying and I feel Nate pick my hand up and hold it, I jerk away pull out my phone and wonder who do I contact first. I send a text to the Sierra and Ellie and tell them that Robert was in an accident at work and that they needed to get their things together in case they need to head home because I don't know any details but that I will update them as soon as I find out something. They are in Tuscaloosa at college, Ace is at school but I will wait a little bit to call him. He doesn't have an hour and 15 minute drive like the girls. Can we just get to the hospital? It feels like ithas been hours but in all reality it has been 5 minutes.

Nate pulls the police car into the ambulance bay and the doors open. I hop out and he comes around the car and escorts me through the doors. I see controlled chaos all around me. The doctor meets me as I enter and I can tell from my years of working the ER that it isn't going to be good news. I ask what are his injuries and the doctor shakes his head and tells me that they don't know everything yet. He tells me that I need to prepare myself and to call any family that we have that might want to see Robert one last time. I told the doctor that I wanted to see Robert and he starts to shake his head no but I look at him and tell him that I worked ER for 4 years and that I know what I am doing that I would stay out of their way but that I needed to let Robert know that I was here.

The doctor tells me to follow him and as we are walking he tells me thatRobert was crushed under a drum that was on a fork lift. He tells me that his body has been crushed but it was amazing that Robert was still awake and talking some. As I enter the trauma room, my breathe leaves me. Robert is a bloody mess with wires everywhere. He isn't on a ventilator , yet but I imagine that it will come. I make my way around the nurses working to the head of the stretcher. I touch Robert's face as I lean over and kiss his forehead. His eyes open and he looks at me and says, "I love you" as tears come to my eyes I tell him, " I love you too , I just wanted you to know I was here. I am going to step back and let them do their jobs and so are you." Robert tries to smile but it comes out a grimace. He looks up and sees Nate in the doorway and opens his mouth and calls Nate over. I tell Robert to rest but he shakes his head no. Nate walks over and Robert tells him thank you and Nate looks at Robert with a questioning look. Robert says, "Thank you for getting her here so that I can see her before I die" Nate just nods his head and steps back. I look at Robert and tell him that he needs to quit talking like that. The nurses tell me that they are taking him for scans. I head to the waiting room and know that I have to make the hardest calls ever.
