Through it All

Chapter 10

While Nate is in with Robert, Cheyenne spends time with her family. She comforts her kids at first but then they all start telling stories of things that Robert has said and done over the years with the people in the waiting room. She sees Roberts sister and her family come in and tells them that she will take them back when Nate comes out because Robert asked to not be disturbed.
Nate stalks through the hallway past the waiting room Cheyenne tells Roberts mom and dad to take his sister back and she follows Nate down the hallway out the side door. Once she opens the door she calls his name. Nate turns around and she sees he's angry but there is something there that hasn't been their before it looks like he is hurt. Cheyenne starts toward Nate and he puts his hand up and says stop right there I need some time so I am going home to change but I will come back. If you need something or if anything changes just call me or send a text. I can't deal with him right now I'm sorry I got angry at a dying man and I'm sorry that I couldn't keep my promise to you. But that sorry son of a bitch laying in that bed doesn't deserve you or your love or your loyalty. He is nothing but a prick and now I regret listening to you talk me out of kicking his ass a couple years back. Cheyenne I'm sorry I know that you love him but you are to good for him. Please forgive me for letting my mouth run away but I will be back I just need to get out of this uniform before I take my gun out and shoot him. No sooner than those words came out of Nates mouth they came to the door telling Cheyenne that she needed to come quickly. Cheyenne turns and runs and Nate follows because he can't let her shoulder this burden alone even if he hates the SOB laying in that bed dying.
Cheyenne goes to the room and finds the alarms going off Roberts heart is starting to slow down, Cheyenne knows that it won't be long. She tells Robert to hang on that B should almost be here and he would be upset if he didn't get to talk to him one more time. Robert nods and motions for her to crawl up beside him. Cheyenne does and Robert holds her and looks at his family standing by the bedside and knows that he was blessed more than he deserved. The fact that the woman laying on his chest was still there after all he had put her through was more than he deserved. Nate was right he didn't deserve her love or loyalty but was thankful he had it. Really need to wait and talk to BG when he gets here, he will make sure that Cheyenne is taken care of after I'm gone. He will keep Nate at a distance.
Talking to each of my kids was so hard, they are all strong like their mother. They promised me to watch after each other and Brody even asked for my blessing to ask Ellie to marry him. He said that it wouldn't be anytime soon because she wanted to finish school first but he wanted to ask for my blessing now and would ask Cheyenne when the actual time came. I'm tired I think I will just rest a while now.

BG calls Amber when he knows that she should be out of school. He asks her why she didn't come with him and she tells him that she has some things on her mind and just needs time to think. BG asks her if there is another man. Amber denies any other man but tells him that she has some decisions she needs to make about work and family. This leaves BG confused because he has no idea what Amber is talking about. She tells him that she loves him and asks if he has heard anything else. BG tells her that they are just waiting for Robert to die and he's praying that he makes it in time to talk to him. Amber says that she is sorry and to let her know if anything changes and that she will talk to him later. BG is more confused than before but he knows that the people he is heading to need him to be strong. He will figure this shit out with Amber when he gets back home. He pulls into the hospital parking lot and gets out running. As he enters he goes to the desk asking where is theICU waiting room. He gets directions and runs down the hall and stops in his tracks. He has never seen this many people in a hospital waiting room. They are lining the entire hallway if he had to count he would say it was probably over 100 people there. BG looks for Cheyenne, Sierra, Colt, Ellie and Brody and Ace. He sees Ace at the same time Ace spots him. Ace makes his way to BG and says you need to come on there isn't much time left we don't think. BG follows Ace and he sees Cheyenne and Robert in the bed they both look so peaceful he hates to disturb them. Ace steps back out of the room.
Cheyenne stirs and see BG and wakes Robert up. Robert asks for time alone with BG

BG gives Robert a hug and sits in the chair by the bed, waiting for Robert. Robert looks at BG and says I need to ask you to do something for me when I'm gone. BG says man just ask you know I would do anything for you. Robert says I need you to watch after Cheyenne. Can you just check in on her everyday with a call or text? She's not going to let most people in not even the kids. You know she is going to be strong and not let anyone see her break. I'm afraid when she does she will turn to Nate and he will waltz right in and break her even more. Well after our conversation I know that's what he plans to do. BG looks at Robert and Robert tells him about his and Nate's conversation. Robert said I know he is right I don't deserve her but for whatever reason she is mine ands he stuck by me even when I was hard to love. She never let on to the kids that it wasn't always happy or that she even threatened to leave. That was the one thing that woke me up a couple years back when she looked at me and said if she was going to have to deal with what life dealt her alone then she might as well leave. I love her BG and I don't want to leave her or the kids, but apparently God has other plans. So saying all that can you keep in touch with her, help her and can you be there for my kids. Can you help Ace navigate the next few years will you be that male influence in my kids lives. I know that with recording and touring and the farm you are busy but can you please promise me that you will keeping touch with them and be there for them? The tears have started to fall down Robert's face as he says this last part and BG looks up with a tear running down his face, and replies yeah man I will be there for your family. They will never have to want for anything I promise you brother. Robert says thank you but I have one more request can you go get Cheyenne and being her back and then stand guard at the door. Yeah man but why do you need a guard at the door? Robert smiles and says I plan on showing her how much I love her one more time, my lower half may not work but I can't leave this world without letting her know how precious she is to me. BG nods and smirks at Robert and says I will be right back with your girl, you just hang on.
