For Starters....OMM OH MY MOONS! DUNE AND SIX-CLAWS WERE FRIENDS! THEY WERE BFFS! oh my GOSH! this makes his betrayal even worse!
Okay... I was rereading book 1 and something caught my attention that I didn't realize before reading Winglets Deserter. Dune barely hesitates before attacking the skywings to protect the Dragonets. But in Deserter he said they should just leave Blaze out in the sand storm rather than save her. Why is that? Because of Six-Claws.
Dune sacrificed his life protecting the dragonets because of what Six-Claws told him.
You never leave dragonets in danger.
I would bet a lot that when Dune came out and saw Scarlet and the skywings threatening the dragonets, one thought went through his head. "you never leave dragonets in danger" and he acted based on that.
Also besides that there are plenty of other things regarding Dune. For instance, I don't think anyone really noticed how much he regretted stealing Sunny. He was taken away from an evil queen that hurt him by his best friend. He betrayed that friend, and someone who had trusted him with her biggest secret. Thorn was his friend. And he betrayed her.
