Clark liked Y/N ever since she came over to his house and cried over her ex-boyfriend around the age of 7. From that day on, he knew that he never wanted to see her cry over a guy and decided that he was going to save her.

Maybe it's the way she laughed at his jokes or the way she doesn't treat him like a total loser, which he thought he was. Clark just fell harder and couldn't get out of the hole he dug himself in. Clark liked her.

He knew it. But he would never dare say that to her. Everyone knew though. It was obvious. Unfortunately, not obvious enough.

The girls in his school thought it was sweet that a cute nerd like him liked another nerd girl like Y/N.

It wasn't until high school that he shot up a foot and grew muscle, thank his alien genes, that he caught the eye of many girls around the small town of Smallville.

And since she hanged around him so much, guys began to notice Y/N too as puberty began to smack her. (You're beautiful, shut up.)

And one of the girls that really liked the blue-eyed boy was a girl named Cassia. She was short and had long brown caramel locks and light blue eyes with a hint of freckled from the Kansas sun.

Clark liked Y/N, and sadly to his luck, she was friends with Cassia.

In the corner of his eyes, he spotted the short brunette leaning against her locker across the hall, staring not so subtly and Clark, making him shift uncomfortably.

He closed his locker and began to turn around and met bright e/c eyes.

"Jesus, you scared me." He breathed out.

Y/N just smiled and glanced towards Cassia's direction. "Gotta admirer." She noted, beaming at Clark.

Clark just laughed nervously, "She's probably staring at someone else." He brushed off.

Y/N gave him a deadpanned look, as if he was stupid. "You're dumb, Clark." She stated, flatly.

Clark glanced at the girl down the hall, Cassia blushed a bright red as she turned away after being caught staring.

"You should ask her out." Y/N said, nudging him with her elbow.

His heart stung as it gained 50 pounds.

"I don't... I don't know, she's just..." His voice trailed off, looking away from Y/N's gaze.

"What? Not perfect enough?" Y/N interrogated.

Not you, "She isn't my type." Clark clarified.

The bell signaled the end of the school day. Clark readjusted his backpack before heading out to his old pickup truck to go home.

Y/N ran after him, "What's your type then?" She asked, again.

You, "I don't know... I don't know her, I guess." He shrugged as they climbed into his truck.

"And if got to know her, then will you give her a try?" She asked.

Clark turned up the radio but she turned it back down. Giving him a look, she narrowed her eyes at him as he sighed, knowing he can't escape this.

"I don't know..." He said. "I-I don't think we would match."

She frowned as they drove in silence. Her hands trailed along the seat stitches of the car as she thought absentmindedly. He loved it when she did that, especially when her finger was on his skin. It sent goosebumps and butterflies everywhere.

"You need a girl, Clark." She sighed. "I'm just being a good best friend and helping you find one."

The word best friend echoed in his mind.

"Sorry if I come off as pushy." She apologized, facing him. "I just..."

Clark plastered a smile on his face. "I know, you mean well."

When they arrived home, the house was empty. Ma and Pa were probably tending the fields, so they enter as plopped down, procrastinating all of their homework.

She wrapped her arms around him while he rested his head on top of hers. They enjoyed each other's warmth as Clark thought about his feelings for her.

"Maybe we can start off slow." She said, sitting up. "You just need to meet a few girls besides me." She chuckled. "Then you'll find someone."

Clark looked at her, frowning at the horrible idea. All I need it you.

Y/N mistook it for unsureness. "Don't give me that look, I'll meet some guys too."

His heart sank lower. Her hopeful smile made him nod, reluctantly.

She beamed, brightly and clapped in excitement. "And then, maybe our kids will be best friends or soulmates." She daydreamed off as Clark tried to crawl out of his self-pity.

The best friends were in two different worlds, Clark daydreaming about being together as Y/N daydreaming being together, just not that close.
