Markus parked his car and rushed towards his high school as fast as he could. He was late and no doubt he was going to get an earfull from Jack. Hopefully Eva was feeling compassionate.
He ran up the few stairs, inside the school, manuevered through the halls skillfully avoiding people, and into the cafeteria. He saw the familiar heads of his friends and ran up to them.
"I know I'm late. I'm sorry Eva!" he exclaimed.
He went quiet waiting for the onslaught but there was a silence. He opened his eyes and saw the smirks of all his friends. As he looked around there were distinctly two people missing.
"Where's Jack and Eva?" he questioned.
Halley snickered. "Don't you remember Mark?" she asked. "Jack is taking Eva to th airport this morning."
As soon as she said it he remembered. They'd talked about it yesterday before they left school. Eva was going to Michigan to visit her aunt. She was going to be gone for a week, and Jack was taking her to the airport.
"Oh right" he said before sighing relieved. "Oh thank god. I was pretty sure Jack would tear me in half."
Travis, his best friend chuckled. "How come you can't wake up on time? Don't you set like three alarms?"
"I set four" he said guiltily.
"Maybe try five" Kim said smirking.
"So you guys won't tell Jack right?" he looked hopefully at his friends.
"If he doesn't ask" Halley said. "I won't lie if he asks but as long as he doesn't bring it up my lips are sealed."
"Same" Travis, Kim, and Luke said.
Mark sincerely hoped Jack didn't ask.
The bell rang and they slowly got up and miandered towards their homerooms.
"So how do you think this week is going to go?" Travis asked.
"What do you mean?" Mark asked.
"Well" Travis began, "Jack and Eva are mates now. I don't think being separated is very good for them." Mark listened curiously. "I'm not sure what's going to happen but if i were you i would be on time and stay on Jack's good side."
Mark sighed, "Maybe you should be the beta." He looked at his best friend with a sad expression. "You're much better at this than me."
Travis chuckled. "It doesn't really work like that. You're stronger than i am."
Mark went to their usual table where Kim and Luke already sat. He wa already into his lunch, eating hungrily, as the rest of his friends joined them.
He was chewing a bite of his sandwich when his arm was nudjed. He looked over to Travis who was looking across the cafe. "Get ready. Jake and his crew are on their way over here."
Mark swallowed hard. Seeing as he was beta it was now on him to protect the pack.
"Where's Jack losers?" Jake asked.
Mark put on a tough look on his face and got up from his seat. He faced Jake not showing the fright he actually felt. His face held disdain and annoyance towards the older boy.
"He's on his way" Mark replied. "What's it to you? Jack already told you he doesn't deal with weaklings." Oh he was so going to get it. He was now just taunting Jake to hit him.
Jake had his own pack, and they were always trying to take over their pack. Jake had some sort of history with Jack and they didn't get along. They'd gotten into fights numerous times. Jack not being here was easy pickings for Jake.
