A few years passed, but not much changed. Marinette still liked Adrien, he still liked Ladybug, and they still had no idea they were chasing each other in circles.
For two more consecutive Valentine's days, Marinette sent him a thoughtful card, and both times, forgot to sign it. Both times, Adrien instinctually attributed the card to Ladybug, it was his only ray of hope that he'd ever get the girl of his dreams.
One thing that did change, however, was that Chat became progressively more bold in his flirting. Now only a couple days before high school graduation, he was indeed feeling quite like a man rather than a boy. Soon he'd be able to move out from under his father's roof and start running his own life. Only one thing could be any better.
With all that in mind, he made his boldest move yet. "We make a pretty great team M'Lady, I wouldn't want anyone else to be my partner in crime fighting." He told her as her Miraculous Ladybug spell reversed all the damage from the akuma they had just defeated.
"Nor would I Kitty." She interjected.
Chat hadn't expected her comment, and it made him feel like he lost the rythem of what he was saying, but he appriciated it anyway. "Wow, I'm so glad you feel that way. Anyway, uh, I wasn't finished yet. I wouldn't want anyone else to be my partner in crime fighting, nor in anything else." He put a hand on her shoulder "Someday, Bugaboo, I intended to make you Mrs. Agreste."
Her eyes went wide. "What?"
Should he repeat it? Well, she did ask him to. "Someday, Bugaboo, I intend to make you Mrs. Agreste."
She started backing away from him, and he wondered if he would need to stop her before she backed off the roof. Luckily, having become quite accustomed to rooftop safety, she stopped herself just in time. "Oh, goodness." She stood quaking on the spot.
Chat had suspected she might be mad at him, or repulsed, but not fearful, he didn't know what was wrong with her.
"You're Agreste." She squeaked. Oh, he had said that, hadn't he? Now she knew who he was. Was that good? Was it bad?
"You, me, I." They were reminded by her beeping miraculous that they needed to leave. "Goodnight, Adrien." She lept away, not really noticing what she had called him, nor his expression.
"What did I do?" He asked himself, "what's worse, she knows who I am now." He was glad he hasn't transformed back yet, because his kwami was going to give him the teasing of a lifetime.
Because of the delay, Ladybug hardly got to her room in time to detransform. "What just happened?" Marinette groaned, flopping down on her bed.
"Chat said that he wanted to-" Tikki started.
"I know! Don't repeat it, please!"
"Oh, I guess I still don't get it when you ask me to do something you don't really want me to do." At least she now knew 'pinch me' was never for real. "So what are you going to do?"
"The only thing I'm good at."
"Make a wedding dress?"
"NO! Tikki, I'm going to sleep on it." True to her word, Marinette was snoring within seconds.
