-This one comes after a comic that I saw on YouTube by the name of "Returning the Collar". I don't know who wrote that comic. It has too sad of an ending to suit happy-go-lucky me, so I wrote this continuation.-
When Adrien came into class the first thing he saw was Nino and Alya standing in the doorway looking worried. They were watching Marinette who was surprisingly already in her seat and bawling her eyes out.
Wanting to avoid the crisis of her becoming an akuma, as well as harboring genuine concern for a friend, he questioned the duo at the entryway. "Hey, what's wrong with her?"
Alya shrugged, "I wish I knew, she won't tell me a thing. Won't tell a soul actually, her parents followed her out of the bakery trying to get her to talk to them; she came in here to avoid them."
That didn't sound right. The few times Adrien had seen Marinette's parents, he had been awestruck at how close they were with each other and with her. Something was gravely wrong.
He went over closer to her and saw her hand clutched in a fist, so hard that her knuckles were turning white. Whatever she had in there was most likely to become her akumatized item, he had to get it away from her. "Hey," he said softly "can I see what you have there?"
Marinette only whimpered and pulled her fist closer to herself.
Telling himself it was for her own good, Adrien lifted her hand and forcibly pried open her fingers. Out fell his ring, or rather, the ring that had been his until last night.
"... You're Ladybug." Everyone else in the classroom just looked at one another with surprised expressions. The mood was too gloomy for anyone to muster an exclamation, not even Alya, not even Adrien.
Marinette shook her head. "Not anymore. I can't do it without him."
Adrien sighed, now he knew she was in pain because of him. He'd been pushed to it by pain she'd put him through, but she'd done so inadvertently, and he had no desire to hurt her either. "Do you know why Chat Noir left you?"
Marinette shook her head.
"It's because he loves you an awful lot. He tried to tell you that, but you never seemed to think he was serious. He eventually came to the conclusion that you didn't care anything for him, and his heart couldn't take it, so he decided the only solution was to cut you out of his life; and that required stepping down as Chat Noir. But, if he sees that you really do care this much, he'll come racing back, because by your side is where he wants to be."
Marinette shook her head, "but how would he ever happen to see that?"
Adrien rested a hand on her shoulder. "I'm sorry M'Lady, will you please give me back my miraculous?"
A collective gasp was heard around the room, and for the first time that morning, Marinette looked up. Her eyes were still inflamed and leaking her sorrow, but the torrent slowed to a trickle.
Suddenly she was on her feet and collapsed head first into Adrien's chest, hard enough to wind him. "Don't ever leave me again you stupid kitty!"
He took that as permission to reclaim his miraculous, and slip it back onto the finger where it had resided for months. With the reunion of miraculous to wielder, Plagg rematerialized in the air nearby as Adrien wrapped his arms around the emotional girl leaning against him. "I wouldn't dream of it."
