'Fortune teller! Hypnotist! Magician!' the sign above the tent proclaimed. The fact that one man spread his talent so thinly across three mystical arts should have been a warning that he wasn't well practiced in any one, but Chloe Bourgeois never considered the consequences until after she acted, and neither Ladybug nor Chat Noir thought to stop her.

There was a carnival in their district of Paris, and the mayor had orchestrated for their heroes to have free access to everything. There was a large crowd, he reasoned, and that made a vulnerable target for Hawkmoth to attack. It was best if defense were already standing by, and if no danger struck, it was a nice gift to thank Ladybug and Chat Noir for all they did.

Adrien wasn't allowed to go to the carnival anyway, but Marinette had to fake a short-term bug to be able to miss it and go as her alter ego. It wasn't all bad; she still got to spend part of the day with Alya, and her best friend was thrilled to get some pictures of Ladybug in a more relaxed setting.

Unfortunately, Chloe also wanted a piece of the heroine's attention. "Oh, Ladybug!" she almost sang, flinging her arms around the heroine. "Come into the magic tent with me!"

"I'd rather not," Ladybug declined, extricating herself from the girl.

"Why not?"

"Because..." 'Because you're Chloe.' Ladybug wanted to say. "I just don't feel like it."

"M'Ladybug," Chat put a hand on her arm. "May I have a word with you?"

"What is it?" she asked him, drawing to the side to speak privately.

"What's wrong? You've spent time with every other civilian who's asked you today. What's different this time?"

"I don't like her," Ladybug growled. "... It's a personal thing."

"Is this something from your civilian life?"

"Er..." Lots of people didn't get along with Chloe, but Ladybug didn't know of anyone who butted heads with her more than her own civilian form. Chat had guessed correctly, but she didn't want to confirm his suspicion indubitably.

"I think you should go anyway," he told her. "The mayor gave us free access to everything here today. The least we can do is keep his daughter happy."

"Fine," Ladybug grumbled, "but only if you come with me, I don't want to be left alone with her."

The two superheroes flanked Chloe as they entered the dimly lit tent, standing off to the sides as she marched directly up to the table. "I want you to show me all of the wonderful things waiting in my future!" she demanded.

The hooded man regarded her as though he were looking through her rather than at her. "We have a code among fortune tellers. Revealing too much of a person's future can be dangerous. Most people will go out of their way to experience only the good, but there is no sucess without tragedy. I'm afraid I can't grant your request, but I can show you your true self." He set a mirror up onto the table.

Chloe stared intently into the mirror. "She's beautiful! Oh, wait a minute, that's just regular me. Aren't you going to show me something I don't already know?"

"That is not a magic mirror," he told her. "If it were, anyone could do my job. Now, I will use my own magic to read your character and feed that information to the mirror." He closed his eyes, bringing his slightly cupped upraised palm to hover right in front of her forehead. "I sense that you like to preen, and that you are constantly seeking attention. Behold the creature that defines you!"

With a grand flick of the man's wrist, a flash momentarily blinded everyone in the room. Once her vision was restored, Chloe eagerly checked the mirror - only to find that the table was now a good way above her head. She looked down at herself and her brilliant white plumage. "Aaach!" she screamed in an ear piercing voice.
