It had been a good ten years since Marinette met her boyfriend, Adrien, and a little less since she had become his girlfriend. Conversation usually flowed easily between them these days, but today he seemed too pensive to talk much as he lead her to a surprise he had prepared in celebration of the anniversary of their going out. As they walked, she attempted to draw him out with a summary of their relationship so far.
"I hated you the first time we met. Not for anything you did, of course, but just because you said you were friends with Chloe. Then you explained to me about what happened with the gum, and how you'd never been to school before, and gave me your umbrella... you made me feel something I'd never felt before. Pretty soon I was the complete opposite. I idolized you so much that I couldn't speak a complete sentence to you! We actually started hanging out quite a bit, but never without Nino and Alya; even then we never really ... talked. Then everything between us changed overnight." Up until this point she hadn't even been sure if he was listening, but now she knew he was. Both of them still blushed when recalling the dizzying feeling of realizing the person they'd fallen head over heels for also had a crush on them. "All it took was one time that our alter egos couldn't get away fast enough. We were forced to detransform in front of each other. It didn't take us long to start dating after that, did it?"
Her boyfriend shook his head. To his recollection, he'd asked her out two days later. It had become somewhat habitual for Chat Noir to suggest some romantic outing to Ladybug; the only difference was that that time she accepted.
"Where are we going?" Marinette suddenly asked.
Adrien reacted in a way his girlfriend couldn't quite understand. He blushed deeply and gulped visibility before saying "Probably... marriage."
Marinette stopped walking and stared at him, blushing hard. "Adrien! I wasn't talking about our relationship! I just meant, where are you taking me now?" She gestured to their linked hands by which he had been leading her.
"Oh..." Adrien rubbed the back of his neck, now embarrassed of himself. "I can't tell you, Bugaboo, it's supposed to be a surprise."
"All right," Marinette agreed, then quietly enough that Adrien probably wasn't supposed to hear, "I do hope we make it to marriage, too."
Adrien did hear, and a smile spread across his face; the little black box in his pocket was no longer impossibly heavy.
