At the time, Valentine's Day seemed to be an utter failure for Marinette. She had her first kiss, but not as she would have hoped. It was with her battle partner, not her crush, and the boy didn't even have memory of it. She had also meant to finally confess her feelings to Adrien, but sent off the card without a signature. The day ended, and no lasting impression seemed to have been made, that is, until a couple of months later when she overheard a question of interest while most of the boys in class were having a conversation.
"What about you? Has the hotshot model had any luck with the girls?" Kim asked Adrien.
Desire to hear her crush's answer caused Marinette to linger rather conspicuously nearby.
"Kind of," Adrien scratched the back of his head "there was this one letter I got on Valentine's Day."
"One letter? Dude, you got a bag full, I saw them!" Nino interjected laughing.
Marinette's heart sank. Of course, dozens of girls had their sights on Adrien, he was so perfect! What ever made her think he might notice her out of the throng?
"Yeah, I did, but I'm not counting letters from girls who have only ever seen me in a magazine. That's not what I want, this seemed like the only one that someone had put effort into, as though she cared for me as a person instead of just a minor celebrity."
Some twinge of hope raised itself within Marinette, but she pushed it down. She knew that she had put effort into her letter. She knew that she cared for him as a person; but that probably didn't come through so well in her poem. Surely someone more eloquent than herself had captured Adrien's attention.
"So who's the girl?" Someone prompted.
"I don't know," Adrien's shoulders sagged a little "she didn't sign it."
At that moment Marinette was certain in some deep part of her brain that he was talking about her, yet she wasn't concisely going to accknowledged that yet. She'd only be getting her hopes up for nothing, how could she claim now what she had done?
"It was quite sappy honnestly, a red heart shaped card with a poem about how her heart would belong to me forever," Adrien looked a little dreamy. "but she's exactly the kind of girl I need. She seems more like a fantasy than anything else."
Marinette's brain was now fried, she stabilized herself against a desk as she continued to listen.
The other boys teased Adrien, but he didn't seem to care. "Looks like Agreste fell hard for his secret admirer!"
Secret admirer? That gave Marinette an idea.
--
Word spread fast about Adrien's secret admirer. He far more often had a genuine smile on his face, and he sometimes even brought her letters to school with him to look over in between assignments.
At first, Alya was indigent on behalf of her best friend, but soon enough she noticed the satisfied grin Mari wore as she watched Adrien pour over one of the letters yet again. "Girl, don't tell me you're responsible for that." She jerked her head toward the blond boy who was now unabashedly hugging the letter to his chest.
Marinette nodded enthusiastically, but put a finger to her lips. "Don't spoil it!"
"I'm proud of you girl," Alya hugged her best friend "but you still have to tell him that it's you!"
Marinette nodded again, with less exuberance this time. If she wanted to be with him, she'd have to figure out how to reveal her identity. That ended up happening completely differently than she would have suspected, but the results couldn't be argued with.
--
Ladybug showed up to where she was supposed to meet with Chat Noir (they were planning to discuss a shift in akuma behavior), but when she got there, her partner was nowhere in sight. Instead, Adrien leaned up against the outer wall of a building.
He smiled widely when he saw her, and forgoing any sort of greeting, bluntly stated "I know you're my secret admirer. I want you to know that my heart belongs to you too."
Her heart was now leaping around frantically at his confrontation. She wanted to accknowledged that, yes, it was her, and see where that could take them, but she also feared that could be dangerous.
"H- how in the world did you find out?"
"My heart told me."
She wanted to yell out about at him about how he could leap to such an assumption with no solid evidence, but she couldn't, he did happen to be correct.
"I suppose you're heart told you my civilian identity too?"
"No," the sadness in his voice surprised her, he really wanted to know her "I was hoping you'd tell me that. It's been long enough hasn't it Bugaboo?"
She recoiled a bit from the familiar nickname coming out of a mouth she didn't expect to utter it. "You're Chat Noir?!"
"Yes." He immediately tensed up, for some reason expecting her to be angry. "Please don't make this be over because of that."
She shook her head. "It's not over, we just... let's focus on our work now, Kitty."
For the rest of their rendezvous she stayed strictly professional with him, making him fear that she'd been trying to let him down easy, but a few days later the next letter arrived, and they kept coming. Her content had changed somewhat. She still told him every letter how precious he was, but she also started talking more about herself.
First, she told him about their first kiss he didn't even know they had. After that she told him about her collection of his pictures, the pull-down schedule, and the time she'd stolen and hacked his phone. He now knew so much about her, but he still didn't know her. Finally, she told him her name.
