Alya's Shipping Math

A/n - This one's just goofy. There was a conversation I had several years ago in a different fandom where someone introduced "shipping math". That concept has lingered in my brain ever since, and decided to make a comeback in my current writing.

"So, if you're Ladybug..." Alya repeated for the fourth time. She appeared to be in deep thought, which was making Marinette wary about the conclusion her best friend was going to draw from this. She hadn't meant to reveal her alter ego to the blogger, but Alya's habit of dropping in unannounced had landed her right in the middle of a discussion between Marinette and Tikki. Marinette then had no choice but to introduce her kwami friend and reveal her deepest secret. She could only hope loyalty to a friend would dull Alya's need to report every little detail she learned about Ladybug.

"Yes, Alya, we've established that I'm Ladybug. Can we move on to something else, or...?"

"So, if you're Ladybug... then Adrien must be Chat Noir!"

"What?" That wasn't anything for which Marinette had prepared herself. She really did not know where Alya was going with this. "How did you get that out of it?"

"Well, is he?"

"Alya, I don't know who Chat Noir is. He could be anyone - what makes you think he's Adrien?"

"Adrien is your soulmate."

Marinette blushed and looked down. "I'd like to think so, but how does that make him Chat Noir?"

"Because Chat Noir is Ladybug's soulmate, and if you're Ladybug, then your soulmate must be Chat Noir!"

"How did you determine that Chat Noir is Ladybug's soulmate?"

"Because he's Adrien! Adrien is Chat Noir, and your soulmate, and you're Ladybug, so Ladybug and Chat Noir must be soulmates!"

"Alya, that's circular reasoning."

"It makes sense to me."

"You too, Tikki?"

"Sure, Ladybug and Chat Noir always have a special bond. That could mean he's your soulmate!"

"So then, that would mean that he has to be Adrien, because Chat Noir is my soulmate and Adrien is my soulmate?"

"Exactly!" shouted both Alya and Tikki at once.

Marinette sat down on her chaise with a sigh. Everything they were saying was mere presumption that made no sense to her, and yet her friends had thoroughly confused her emotions.

"So, if Adrien is Chat Noir..." this time it was Tikki. "That means that he has a crush on you!"

Marinette's startled eyes met the other set of blue ones in the room. "It can't be that easy, can it?"

"Of course it can!" Alya encouraged her friend. "You're his soulmate! It would be natural for him to have a crush on you!"

"I'm his soulmate... he's my soulmate... you really think so?" Now Marinette was smiling, persuaded into a mindset that was quickly making her giddy.

"I know so, Girl." Alya hugged her friend reassuringly.

At that, Marinette gave into the irrationality readily, because she fully wanted it to be true. "What would I do without you?"
