Slowly, Marinette eased into alertness. It was nice for a change; being able to wake up on her own without an alarm clock blaring at her, or her kwami gently but persistently pulling on her hair and ears. It was a luxury she wasn't normally afforded - in fact, why was it she was getting it this morning?

As her senses came into focus, that was the exact question on her mind. It was a school day, she remembered, and should be like any other. She checked her alarm clock. It had gone off, but several minutes of failing to rouse her had convinced it to give up and go back to bed itself. Not unusual, but the alarm usually did succeed in waking up Tikki -  so where was she?

A faint whimper drifted to Marinette's ear, signaling her to look beside her pillow. There lay her kwami, curled up with her eyes closed - antennae drooping, and a pained grimace on her face.

"Oh..." Marinette breathed out gently, struck by a wave of compassion. Her dear companion was ill again. Marinette had to go to school, but she didn't want her kwami to suffer any longer - would it be so bad to skip school for the day and take Tikki to see Master Fu? Her teachers would be livid. They probably already were, seeing as it was already 10 o'clock. She'd been late to school by an hour before, but this was a new record!

Marinette plucked the kwami off the bed and cradled her in both hands. "Don't worry, Tikki, I'll take you to Master Fu right away."

This illness must have taken even more out of her kwami than the last one had. Tikki didn't even open her eyes, only gave Marinette a slight nod and curled herself into a tighter ball. Marinette briefly tucked her magical friend into some warm fabric scraps while she got ready, then transferred the whole bundle - bedding and kwami - into her purse. She ran down the stairs, careful not to jostle the sick kwami as she went.

"Marinette!? What are you doing here this time of the morning?!" her mother exclaimed as Marinette tore through the storefront of the bakery, squeezing her way past customers.

"I slept through my alarm this morning. Sorry, Maman, love you!" With that, she was gone out the front door.

Tom walked out of the kitchen, carrying a fresh loaf of bread to restock what had just been sold. "Was that Marinette I heard?" he questioned his wife.

"She just now left for school." Sabine shook her head in disbelief. "Maybe I should go back to checking on her in the mornings."

"I know Master Fu lives somewhere in this neighborhood, but is it on this block or the next one?!" Marinette exclaimed in frustration. She had been to the guardian's apartment several times before, but never without Tikki to guide her.

"I know there was a lamp post like that on the corner... but there's an identical lamp post just down the street!" As she looked on, a hole opened up beneath the object of her attention and it sank into the ground.

"My startup company was destined to be a big success!" a voice echoed from within the tunnel. "Everything was going perfectly; I hired brilliant employees that I thought I could trust, but one of them turned out to be a mole! Before I could get a patent on my invention blueprints, they'd been sold underground! Now it's my turn to show you how a mole can destroy your world!"

A giant pushup appeared in the sidewalk, cracks preceding it as it forced its way rapidly forward into a group of onlookers - including Marinette. The off-duty superheroine was forced to sprint out of the way, down one of the side streets in question. There she collided with a man standing on the sidewalk, placidly watching the panic. "Hello, Ladybug," he greeted her, "I see you are in need of a place to transform. Would you like to make use of my apartment?"
