Adrien kept his eyes trained on the ceiling above his bed as every one of his internal organs was lifting up and shifting itself to a completely new location in an attempt to reestablish after having been displaced by what was to him such an earth-shattering revelation. Marinette was Ladybug.
He could only watch as the plans he'd clung to for months now seemed to crumble right before his eyes. He'd decided that he would make a move on Ladybug in her civilian form directly after learning who she was, he had nothing to lose. Now, he felt he had everything to lose. Ladybug was Marinette. He already had her in friendship, one he wasn't willing to risk. She was always so nervous around him already, if he were to hit on her now, it could quite possibly scare her away completely.
"Cheese?" A black kwami offered the boy.
Adrien had no interest in the sharply scented cheese, but he appriciated Plagg's concern. The flying cat-like creature was not generally one to share his camembert.
"No Plagg, but thank you." The boy groaned.
"You're thinking about Marinette?"
"Yeah. How long do you think it will take me to get over her?"
"Get over her?" Plagg gave Adrien a quizzical look. "You're not even going to try asking her out?"
Adrien opened and closed his mouth a few times before he settled on the words "I'd better not."
"Why? Is Marinette not good enough to be your girlfriend?"
"It's not that!" Adrien immediately jumped to her defense "I'm trying to respect her wishes. Please don't make it any harder on me."
Neither spoke for several moments before the blond boy decided to continue letting out his emotions "Ladybug was never interested in Chat Noir, so why should Marinette be interested in me? We're the same two people. She'd hate me again if I tried to push it any further. I'd rather stay friends than lose her all together."
"She probably already expects you to make a move on her by this point."
"I know. Hopefully I can gain her trust back though."
This boy wasn't getting it "She's going to think you don't like her anymore."
"Why are you even concerned with this?"
"Because I know you, kid. If you don't go for it I'll have to hear you wondering out loud what would have happened if you did, and I'm not about to put up with it."
For the first time on this topic, Adrien's resolve faltered. She couldn't think that. Could she? She must know how amazing she was. Then again, his partner had never had an inflated ego. He liked that about her. "Do you think she'd still want to be friends with me if I tried just one more time?"
"Friends at least. In all the times she's rejected you, how many times did she seem angry or disgusted."
"None," Adrien admitted "she'd just tell me to focus."
"Then just don't ask her out when you're supposed to be doing something else. You should be fine."
Adrien tried to predict what might happen if he did that, and found he could not. His first idea seemed so very Marinette, and so little Ladybug. In it she would stutter some incoherent reply and run off without giving him a clear answer. The next alternative made him blush. Ladybug could be a bit of a tease, so she might kiss him right on the lips, just to see if he could take it. He wasn't entirely sure if he could. The worst case scenario that seemed realistic to him was that she might laugh in his face and push him away with something like a "give up, Kitty." That was all, the more he thought about it, he really couldn't imagine her screaming at him "get out of my life!", or something comprable, just for asking her out on a date.
If he wasn't allowed to flirt with her, Marinette would let him know, but just maybe, he was allowed. "Plagg, I'm going to try."
